yes, the weeks have passed since my last post, and life has been busy here...
Our Europa Inn is still hoppin', Sabrina is back to school, and i have been busy painting for
commissions and my upcoming solo christmas show starting november 16th at the Imperial Theater.
Needless to say the theme will be somewhat 'entertainment' inspired...and the time when i played the Cornet at the 'Musikkapelle Opfenbach' comes in handy knowing the anatomy of the instruments, haha!
A bit of homesickness I have this time of year- it's Oktoberfest time...
without giving too much info our here, i'd like to post a couple of pix of what i've
worked on the last little while. It's so much fun to explore further into the abstraction process which is still pretty new for me. i enjoy the oil paints, but have painted watercolour this summer quite a bit.
any time spend painting is a treat for me and the kids start laughing when their crazy mother drags her painting bag with her while at an outing...haha!

Ja, die Wochen sind nur so vorbeigeflogen seit meinem letzten Eintrag, unser Leben war vollgepackt!
Unser kleines Hotel 'Europa Inn' ist noch super gebucht, Sabrina ist wieder in der Schule und ich habe viel gemalt: Auftragsarbeiten und auch fuer meine kommende Solo show im Saint John Theater welche am 16. November anfaengt... Keine Frage eines der Themen meiner Bilder wird 'Entertainment' sein...und ich muss sagen, meine Musikkapelle-Opfenbach-Zeit kommt mir jetzt gut gelegen mit all den Instrumenten die ich hier malen sollte! (und ein kleines bissle Heimweh hab ich doch grad jetzt- Oktoberfestzeit)
ohne dass ich hier nun schon zu viel Info's rausgeben will (haha)- hier sind ein paar Bilder an denen ich die letzte Zeit gearbeitet habe. Das Oelmalen macht Spass und ich werde mehr ins Abstrakte gehen, ist ja doch noch recht neu fuer mich. Ich habe trotzdem recht viel in Aquarell gemalt diesen Sommer.

Summer is here and with it lots of opportunity to go out and paint!
last week was the opening of our annual paint out with the 'plein air painters of the bay of fundy' in Eastport, Maine. it was misty, but magical. i had so much fun painting!

The weeks fly by and I still remember fondly the great time I enjoyed in germany this spring.
here are the paintings I did during that time. all are available at Hotel Gierer in Wasserburg at the Bodensee. This is also the Hotel where my husband Markus did his apprenticeship as Chef- and also i worked there for a summer making breakfast, rooms and laundry before i started my new job as dental technician. This was in 1999, and by the end of the summer i met Markus there as well- you know the rest of the story, haha! Hotel Gierer has a newly added big SPA area with all kinds of sauna, pool and ice grottas. If you go to Lake Constance for a vacation and you'd like to treat yourself... make a stop at the Hotel Gierer and say Hi from me! Die Zeit verfliegt und ich erinnere mich noch gern an unseren Deutschlandurlaub diesen Fruehling.
Hier sind die Bilder die ich in dieser Zeit gemalt habe. Alle sind ausgestellt zum Verkauf beim Hotel Gierer in Wasserburg am Bodensee. Dies ist auch das Hotel in dem mein Markus seine Kochausbildung absolviert hat- und auch ich arbeitete dort fuer einen Sommer lang als Maedchen fuer Alles nach meiner Lehre als Zahntechnikerin. Das war im Jahr 1999, und am Ende meines Sommers beim Gierer lernte ich meinen Markus dort kennen- und 'the Rest is History' haha! Das Hotel hat einen neuen erweiterten Spa bereich gebaut mit verschiedenen Saunen, Pool und Eisgrotten. Wenn Ihr am Bodensee seid, schaut doch vorbei und sagt 'nen schoenen Gruss von mir!

Entschuldigung fuer meinen langen 'Urlaub' vom Blog. Ich hatte eine super Zeit in Deutschland mit vielen Familienbesuchen, Mathias' Taufe und die Hochzeit von meinem Cousin wo unsere Sabrina das Blumenmaedchen sein durfte. Auch 4 super Tage hatte ich mit Freundin Kim beim Malen am Bodensee. Die Bilder stelle ich im naechsten Blogeintrag ein.

Inzwischen hat der Alltag mich wieder fest im Griff mit letzten kleineren arbeiten in unserer Pension bevor die Hochsaison anfaengt, die Eroeffnung unseres 'Europa Spa's, Sabrinas letzten Schultagen vor den Sommerferien mit vielen Ausfluegen und fuer die Mama (mich):

how to prep a palette for watercolour painting

it seems every artist has his/her own little method of filling a painting palette with the selected tube colours or watercolour pans to create an easy to use set up for the later painting process.

as you might know i am a follower of Chinkok Tan's method using a limited colour palette consisting of the following primary colours:

-hansa yellow light

-red rose deep (quinacridone)

-phthalo blue

often i use 'da Vinci' paints, but any high quality artists brands work well (do not save on your colours and supplies, you will not get the vibrant colours with inferior quality paint making it frustrating and laborous without getting a satisfactory result). i especially enjoy the 'grumbacher' line for its pigment load and creaminess.

yellow seems to be the colour i use more of than red and blue, so the ratio is something like this: 4 tubes yellow, two tubes red, one blue. this has to be taken in consideration for longer painting trips where art supply stores might not be close by.

now, as i stated above, an artist has the choice of purchasing tube colours or pan colours (cakes). tube colours are squeezed out on the palette whereas cakes are put in the brand specific palettes. i don't have much experience with pan colours, hence i write here about setting up a palette with tube colours only.

for a beginner artist it is challenging to pick up the right dose of pigment, so that the brushmark on the paper is neither too dark/saturated (too much pigment picked up) or too light/watery (not enough pigment picked up by the brush).

to make this challenge easier and more manageble, i prep my palette at least a couple of days before the painting day and let the paint dry in the palette.

i kind of create my own 'watercolour cake' this way.

i place the colours from lightest to darkest (yeah, really tricky with three colours, haha).

often i leave an empty well between each colour;

as later, while i'll be mixing back and forth using the three colours, pigment might travel over from the neighbouring colour 'cake'- resulting in contamination of the colour next to it.

if space is limited of course, just place your colours next to each other.

then, once dry, i can easily close the palette shut, put it with my other supplies in the bag and am ready to go without worrying of wet paint running out and dirtying my bag and supplies.

New Paintings for Europa Inn guest accommodations

The last weeks have been- to say the least- wintery, and with still over 5 foot of snow in my backyard and about 2 weeks worth of snow days totalling; yes, spring seems far away... but this is ok as we are still ripping and tearing here at our Europa Inn- putting in new bathrooms, getting the spa framed up and so on...

and as i had mentioned before i am getting busy creating our new paintings for the guest rooms!

thank you to the people that commented in an earlier post in regards to the theme of the paintings- yes, they will depict maritime seacoast scenes!

here are the first two painted in acrylic, plus #3 in oil- as a work in progress.

i started out with photos i took last summer and small sketches to work my way up

to the 30x40 inch format. the basic block in i try to tackle heads on with little fuss about detail,

i refined then the colour harmonies and wave patterns as i went along.

i have a throw pillow (still in the plastic wrapping) hanging close by the easel where i put little colour smudges on it to see how my mixed colours look next to it. also a curtain fabric swatch is clipped to the pillow.

as i write i hear the carpenters rip open a wall next to the air tub they put in this morning- i made them move the location of the sink for a better bathroom lay out, haha.

i am so excited about our accommodation updates- and i am really looking forward to this summer season to show our guests what we have been up to!

on another note: i have been working furiously on our new website for Europa Inn and it went live last week. please check it out: www.europainn.com . the online booking software and the many links were challenging to tackle, but i am satisfied with the results! let me know what you think- input welcome as it is a work in progress also!

now, i am ready for spring- to get moving and out off the heavy down coats, haha!

Die letzten Wochen waren, nun ja- wie soll ich anders sagen: winterlich. Wir haben noch immer 1.40cm Schnee im Garten und Sabrina hatte insgesamt ca. 2 Wochen 'Schneefrei' in der Schule- drum scheint der Fruehling noch weit entfernt hier in St. Andrews in New Brunswick (Neubraunschweig), in Kanada.

Es ist dennoch ok, da wir immer noch am renovieren und ausbauen sind hier im Europa Inn, unserem kleinen Hotel- neue Badezimmer, Wellness Spa, Fitness Bereich und so weiter...

Und wie ich schon erwaehnt habe in einem fueheren Eintrag bin ich nun beschaeftigt die Gemaelde zu kreiren fuer die neuen Zimmer. Dankeschoen den Lesern, die mir hier Feedback gegeben haben in Bezug auf Design und Stil: Ja, es werden 'Seascapes', maritime Landschaften und Kuestenszenen werden! Heute stelle ich die ersten beiden vollendeten Acrylgemaelde vor und Nummer 3 in Oel, welches noch nicht vollendet ist.

Als Vorlage habe ich Fotos vom letzten Sommer genommen und kleinere Sketche, und so habe ich mich hochgearbeitet zum 75x100cm Format.

In der Anfangsphase beim malen habe ich mich auf das grobe layout 'gestuerzt', ohne Ruecksicht auf Details, Farbharmonien und Wellenformationen habe ich dann nach und nach herausgearbeitet. Neben meiner Staffelei habe ich ein dekoratives Kissen und ein Stuck vom Vorhangstoff unserer Gaestezimmer haengen, in einer klaren Plastiktuete. Da tupf ich dann Farbproben drauf um zu pruefen, ob meine Mischungen mit den Stoffen harmonieren und uebereinstimmen.

Sowie ich hier schreibe hoere ich die Zimmerleute haemmern und bohren- sie verlegen das Waschbecken, fuer ein besseres Badezimmer Layout- mit der neuen Whirlpoolbadewanne.

Ich bin schon richtig in Vorfreude auf die kommende Sommersaison- unsere Neuerungen der Gaestezimmer und der Ausbaus des Spabereiches unseren Gaesten Vorstellen zu koennen!

Erwaehnen moechte ich auch noch kurz, dass ich die letzten Wochen unsere neue Europa Inn Webseite designed habe. Vergangene Woche ging sie 'Live'. Schaut doch vorbei: www.europainn.com und gebt Bescheid ob noch was fehlt da auch die Webseite ein 'work in progress' ist!

Ja, alles in allem bin ich wirklich Fruehlingsreif- nicht nur um aus den dicken Daunenjacken rauszukommen, haha!

after visiting the florist section in the supermarket, i just couldn't help but pick up some tulips- they were poking their little heads out of the wrappers kind of saying: please give me a good home- so i just couldn't resist;-)

as it is 'daycare day' for my kiddies, i chopped away on some need-to-be-done items of my 'bottomless to-do-list' (aka: eat a frog a day) and then rewarded myself with some

painting time- those wonderful fresh smelling tulips-

their crisp white edges and bright red veins in contrast with the fresh green of the nodding leaves are so invigoration!

while painting i listened in on some recordings of the artists helping artists radio show which is super informative for art related business advice. thank you Saeta and Dreama for sharing your knowledge! just hung up with a friends- one recovering from an operation and one talking about guys... i am so thankful for my health, my wonderful family and all the goodness the lord brings into my life every day, may he touch you today in a special way, too!

time is flying and so i should make it my new-years resolution to blog more often, more regularly... right???

yes, we had a wonderful Christmas with the kids. of course during special holidays we miss our families and we cannot leave our restaurant closed as it is a busy time of year for dining out. but we make the most of it by spending family time together, baking german cookies and schedule extra snuggles with our children. yes, this Christmas was truly wonderful and a blessing for us-

and it left me refreshed to start off the new year with enthusiasm to 'get paintin' for my 2 shows coming up this summer and new ideas (not telling yet, haha).

mei, wie die Zeit verfliegt- und ja, ich sollte es mein Vorsatz fuers neue Jahr machen, regelmaessig und oefter zu bloggen, gell?

wir hatten wunderschoene weihnachten mit unseren Kleinen. Natuerlich vermissen wir unsere Familien ganz besonders an solch speziellen Feiertagen doch koennen wir unser Restaurant nicht schliessen da dies ja eine geschaeftige Zeit ist fuer uns mit Weihnachtsfeiern und Familienfesten. Aber wir machen das Beste daraus mit Deutschen Weihnachtsplaetzchen backen, extra Familienzeit und Kuscheln mit den Kindern. Ja, es waren wirklich wunderbare Weihnachtstage und so bin ich frisch und g'richt meine Farben rauszuholen um fuer meine 2 Ausstellungen diesen Sommer zu malen und noch ein, zwei andere Ideen die ich hab (aber wird noch nicht verraten, haha).

ich habe aber eine Frage/Bitte an euch:

Wie ihr ja wisst bauen wir unsere Pension aus/um und ich moechte gerne original Kunst in den Gaestezimmern haben. Nun, hier ist meine Frage: wenn ihr an der Ostkueste in Canada Urlaub machen und im Europa Inn uebernachten wuerdet, wuerdet ihr lieber was Abstraktes oder lieber was Landschaftliches/Darstellendes in eurem Zimmer haben?

Ich werde in den naechsten 2 Wochen mit dem malen anfangen, so jedes Feedback wird dankend gelesen!

so, nun wuensche ich euch ein gesegnetes Jahr 2011 und meine Gebete gehen fuer den Frieden auf der Welt und die Menschen die bei der Flutkatatstrophe hier in der Umgebung ihre Haeuser verloren haben (wie unser Freund Norm und seine Frau Peggy, die 4 Tage vor ihrer Pensionierung ihr Haus verloren hat).

Die Zeit verfliegt und es ist nun doch schon wieder viel zu lange her seit meinem

letzten Blog-Eintrag. Mein Leben ist betriebsam, aber wunderbar voll.

Danke mein Herrgott' fuer all die schoenen Dinge die du in mein Leben bringst.

even though i am not blogging too much these days i am still painting!

have been busy with commissions which are always fun- and a challenge!

they make me grow as an artist and push me forward.

i just finished a biggie: this 6ftx6ft abstract diptych with the title

'You are Fire, I am Ice'. the title is self explanitory, but i wanted to add

that the lay-out of the painting shall represent an embrace symbolizing

unity, closeness and eternity.

the painting is hanging in a log-home overlooking the ocean- and it does not

look wrong in this rustic setting- it looks perky and makes a bold statement.

the owners are world travelled and enjoy visiting the big international art galleries.

what a great honour for me to paint for their home! here's a peek step-by-step.

Auch wenn ich nicht regelmaessig Bloge, bin ich trotzdem am malen!

Ich war Beschaeftigt mit Auftragsarbeiten, die zu malen ist Spass- und eine Herausforderung!

Und mit der Herausforderung lerne ich viel als Kuenstler und komme voran.

the painting here too, is a commission for a friends' anniversary- her husband wanted

to surprise her so i had to sneak out to their cottage without her knowing about it!

the painting has already more meaning, as we had a viscious storm with extreme

high tides last week, and their cottage yard was badly hit.

i hope my painting will remind them of the wonderful summers they spend every summer at their cottage, it was a great honour to paint the view.

Dieses Bild hier ist auch eine Auftragsarbeit gemalt fuer eine Freundin zum Hochzeitstag- ihr Mann wollte sie Ueberraschen, so schlich ich mich zu ihrem Ferienhaeuschen am Meer hinaus weil sie ja nichts mitkriegen durfte. Sogar schon heute hat das Bild mehr Geschichte- denn voriges Wochenende hatten wir hier ein grausames Unwetter, mit Fluten und gefaehrlich hohen Wellen, die auch ihr Grundstueck verwuestet haben.

Ich hoffe das Bild ist eine schoene Erinnerung an ihre Sommer zusammen als Familie. Es war eine grosse Ehre dies Bild zu malen.

summer is always hectic around here with the inn and restaurant running full blast. my three little ones enjoy this time of year with swimming lessons and lots of outings to the beach.

for me it was very special as i took one week for me, a full week of painting with Michael Chesley Johnson trying out oils. it was my first week-long course in over 4 years! needless to say i was mega excited because he's a very skilled artist and patient and knowledgeble teacher- i have taken in the past a couple weekend courses with Michael painting soft pastel offered atSunbury Shores Arts and Nature Center.

we had a fun group with students come as far as Texas- and good painting weather.

Die Sommer sind immer hektisch bei uns mit unserem Restaurant und Pension voll gebucht. Meine 3 Kleinen geniessen diese Jahreszeit mit Schwimmkurs und vielen Ausfluegen ans Meer.

Fuer mich war letzte Woche ganz besonders, da ich meinen ersten 5-tage-Malkurs in ueber 4 Jahren belegt habe ausgeschrieben vom Sunbury Shores Arts and Nature Center. Natuerlich war ich voller Vorfreude auf eine Woche malen mit sehr talentiertem, mehrfach ausgezeichnetem Kuenstler, und geduldigen und erfahrenen Lehrer Michael Chesley Johnson.die Woche habe ich dem Oelmalen gewidmet, hier meine Ergebnisse.

yesterday was a busy day painting with the 'plein air painters of the bay of fundy'- annual paint out. this year in Saint John with the show beeing on display at the Saint John Arts Center from June 24- September 4th 2010.

it was great meeting up with the other artists and soon afterwards everyone headed to their chosen painting spot and only a couple of us were still at the Saint John Power Boat Club marina painting away mid afternoon. the morning i spent painting this acrylic near the SJAC to be close for the noon meet-up.

today i didn't make it unfortunately due to restaurant (our business) obligations and our 3 children missing their mom.

below is the big Pool Painting i did a couple months back and never seem to find the time to blog about in depth.

as it was meant to go into the humid pool area i choose high quality metal primed sign board and ASTM non-toxic sign paint (for the initial 'block in') and artists acrylics for the over layers.

out came a bright swirly and vibrant painting which i hope the viewer finds joyful and stimulating.

our inn pool will not be built this year- too many delays- but i had great fun 'going big'.

the size is 8ftx8ft and i had it attached to our living room wall while i painted it.

you can see it 'in persona' at the 'fundy artists' sale and show at the fairmont algonquin end of july.

the last view days with great weather and gorgeous lupins growing luscious, i just couldn't help but praise the lord with some 'quiet time'- just him and me and the paint brush.

so i escaped the reno (the never-ending-story) and took off with my gear.

i downsized my watercolour travel/plein air kit, as you can see in the picture.

it's now just the palette filled with my three primary colours, one brush, a little portfolio i cut from left over corrugated plastic i had kickin' around and the little stool to sit on. weight incl. water: 2 pounds 12 oz! (without chair: 1 pound). the corrugated platic portfolio serves double: to transport the paper and as a 'pochade box' to set the palette on and to clip the paper onto. i can stand up painting or sit with it on my knee, both work (of course this is not the luxury version,but works great for little 6x8's and sketches. i do not wash the brush directly in the water, but rather dip it in and 'flick' it dry/clean to the side.

die letzten Tage hatten wir super Wetter und traumhafte Lupinen ueberall am bluehen, so konnte ich mich einfach nicht zurueckhalten, hinauszugehen um Gott zu danken- in Stille: nur Er und ich und die Farben. So liess ich die 'Ewig waehrende Baustelle' zurueck und ging hinaus mit meinem Malsach'. Ich vereinfachte mein Aquarell 'Reiseset' um noch mehr Gewicht und Platz zu sparen- siehe Bild. Jetzt wiege Palette, Klappstuhl, Wasser, Papier und Mappe (zum Malpapier transportieren und als Malmappe/Pochade box um Palette aufzulegen und Papier an den hochgeklappten 'Deckel' zu klipsen. damit kann ich im stehen malen und im sitzen- Mappe auf Oberschenkel)

Gewicht inkl. Wasser und Stuhl: 1200gr.! natuerlich nicht eine Luxusausstattung, aber funktioniert super fuer kleinere Aquarelle um 15x20cm und zum sketchen. wenn ich 'en plein air' male, wasche ich den Pinsel nicht direkt im Wasserkanister (die ausgewaschenen Pigmente machen das Wasser sehr schnell schmutzig), sondern tauche den Pinsel ins Wasser und 'schuettle' (in Allgaeu sagten wir immer: schlentzen) ihn zur Seite hin trocken/sauber.

again, time seems to fly- and i have been painting- but not blogging!!!

sorry for that.

i am posting some of my recent watercolour paintings, so you see what i've been up to.

the big 'pool painting' is finished, too, i will blog about it in depth next time.

the lupins are out here at the east coast and they are gorgeous! i am itching to

go out and paint more of them- but it has been raining this week so i wait for a few

nice rays. if the weather doesn't improve, i'll paint from photos i took last week at

Kingsbrae gardens and along the roadside.

my dad was here for a visit from germany as we are still under construction with the inn

and time gets tight as the busy summer season is starting. We all miss him.

und schon wieder ist's passiert: die Zeit scheint zu schnell zu verfliegen und ich hab zwar gemalt, aber nicht gebloggt! Entschuldigung.

Heute stelle ich einige meiner neuen Aquarellbilder ein- (die Oel und Acrylbilder kommen dann im naechsten Blogpost).

Das im letzten Eintrag angkuendigte 'Pool Painting' ist fertig, ich werde in einem seperaten Eintrag genauer meine Vorgehensweise und Gedanken zum Bild beschreiben.

oh, die Lupinen sind am bluehen hier an der Ostkueste- wunderbar! mich juckts rauszugehen und mehr von ihnen zu malen, bevor sie verbluehen- aber leider regnet es seit Tagen und so muss ich wohl auf ein kleines Wolkenloch warten bevor ich raushuepf und mich ins hohe Gras setze. Falls das Wetter nicht besser wird, habe ich aber schon vorausschauend ein paar Fotos gemacht, von denen ich auch malen kann.

Mein Papa hat uns fuer 3 Wochen besucht und die lange Anreise aus Bayern auf sich genommen, nun vermiss ich ihn und unsere Kleinen und Markus auch. aber vieleicht koennen wir uns bald schon wieder sehen.

while our 'hotel-pool' is still beeing dug out, i am anxious to get the decorating end of things figured out. so i started this weekend by painting this tryptich with lots of movement and bright colours. it is not the ful size painting i would need, but it will be helping me by tackling the big painting for the back wall of the pool wall. what i wanted to achive is a painting in bright colours, with lots of movement and in colours of the water and the sun, but still abstract enough that it is not a representational painting.
this is my first abstract and so it was a bit like stepping out in the dark- but a lot of fun!
as i didn't have a plan as such i let the brush and later the palette knife guide me,
midways through, i stepped back and it reminded me of this great artist, Laurie Justus Pace, one of the famous 'daily painters' she paints mostly abstract horses and calls the many layers of thick
acrylic or oil paint 'pulls' . i did not understand what she meant by her 'pulls' but after finishing this painting, i understand!
so, all in all i learned a lot, had oodles of fun and look forward to my next project- the 'real deal' for the backwall of the pool.

Waehrend unser Hotelpool immer noch ausgegraben wird, bin ich schon ganz damit beschaeftigt mit der Decoration des Wellnessbereichs. So habe ich dieses Wochenende mit diesem 3teiligen Gemaelde angefangen .
Es ist kleiner als das endgueltige Gemaelde fuer die Wand hinterm Pool, aber es wird mir helfen, wenns daran geht, das grosse Bild zu malen. ich wollte ein Design, das bunt und farbenfroh die weissen waende einrahmt, das viel Bewegung und Schwung hat, das die Farben des Wassers und der Sonne vereint und das Abstrakt ist. Dies ist mein erstes Abstraktes Gemaelde und nachdem ich nicht wirklich einen 'Plan' hatte liess ich mich von Pinsel und MalPalette leiten. Halbwegs durch, stand ich zurueck und das Bild erinnerte mich etwas an die talentierte Kuenstlerin Laurie Justus Pace , die abstracte Pferde Malt. sie nennt die vielen Schichten von Acryl- oder Oelfarbe- Pull- und ich verstand nie ganz was sie mit 'pull' meint, bis ich jetzt selber die dicken Schichten aufspachtelte. ich glaube ich hab da fast ein halbes kilo farbe aufgetragen und das bild schaut richtig plastisch aus. alles in allem lernte ich viel, hatte riesen Spass und freu mich schon auf mein naechstes Malprojekt: das 'Grosse' fuer die hintere Poolwand!

really, it has been challenging finding regular painting time since baby #3 arrived and our reno started (yes, the guys are still digging that pool by hand- discovering the house is built on rock).

the last days i worked on this painting which you'll see at the Charlotte County Hospital ER in St. Stephen.
They had chosen one that was sold already, so i tried to come up with a similar one without trying to copy (you can see that painting here).
digging through my photo archive, i couldn't find a photo of Kingsbrae Garden parking lot where i painted the first painting 'en plein air', so i used the painting as my sole reference.
master painters such as Kevin Macpherson recommends in his books to use plein air sketches to work from as references as they hold key information about colour relationships, lights and darks a camera never could capture (along with the memory of the place you build while painting the sketch).
now, how well i captured the true colour, i'm not sure, but my mind certainly quickly recalled the day i stood there in that parking lot, in between those clusters of blue and pink lupins, the fog just lifting mid morning as it does so often in the east coast in early summer, and me, happy that the acrylic paints on the palette not drying up as soon as i squeeze them out of the tube as in hot weather, 6 month pregnant (lurking over to a cooler filled with a hefty lunch and snack).
mmmhh, what a treat- the memories of summer in the air and the song of the little birds nesting- indulging in it in the midst of winter without leaving my home!
while painting, Markus came home and said how happy i looked, and that he wants me to keep it up on a regular base again. oh, what a sweetie he is!

wirklich, es entpuppt sich als richtiggehende Herausforderung regelmaessig die Zeit zum Malen zu finden, seit Baby Nummer 3 da ist und seit unsere Renovierunsarbeiten im vollen Gange sind (ja, die Jungs hacken immer noch das Schwimmbecken von Hand aus- das Haus ist ja wirklich auf Fels gebaut).
die letzten paar Tage habe ich an diesem Bild gemalt, welches in der Notaufnahme des
St. Stephen Krankenhauses zu sehen sein wird. Sie hatten sich eines meiner schon verkauften Bilder ausgesucht und so versuchte ich ein aehnliches zu malen, ohne komplett zu kopieren (das andere Bild ist hier zu sehen).
ich konnte in meinem Fotoarchiv kein Referenzfoto vom Kingsbrae Parkplatz finden, wo ich das erste Bild 'en plein air' gemalt habe, so hatte ich das verkaufte Bild as alleinigen Anhaltspunkt.
Bekannte Maler u.a. Kevin Macpherson empfiehlt in seinen Buechern auch mal allein 'en plein air' Studien als Referenzmaterial fuer groessere Studio Gemaelde zu verwenden, da sie wichtige Anhaltspunkte wie Farbharmonien und Hell/Dunkelunterschiede beinhalten die eine Kamera nie in vollem Umfang widergeben kann (und die Erinnerung an die Umgebung die waerend der Zeit des Malens eingepraegt wird).
nun ja, wie wirklichkeitsgetreu ich die Farben widergegeben habe ist nicht gewiss, aber die Erinnerung an den schoenen Tag beim Kingsbrae Garten wo ich das erste Bild 'plein air' gemalt habe kam sofort zurueck- inmitten der bluehenden blauen und rosa Lupinen, der Nebel gerade am verschwinden mitte des Morgens, wie so oft im Fruehsommer an der Ostkueste hier, und ich voll Freude dass die Acrylfarben nicht sofort auf der Palette festtrocknen wenn ich die Tube ausdruecke wie so oft in der Hochsommerhitze und im 6. Monat schwanger (mit einem Auge immer auf dem vollbepackten Picknickkorb voller Schaetze die vertilgt werden wollen)
oh, welch ein Genuss, in Gedanken zu schwelgen von lauen Sommerlueften und froehlichem Vogelgesang inmitten des kalten Winters- ohne einmal das Haus zu verlassen!!!
Als Markus heimkam und mich mit inmitten meines Malvorhabens sah, sagte er, wie gluecklich ich doch aussaehe und dass ich doch das Malen wieder regelmaessig in meinen Alltag einbeziehen soll.
oh, was fuer ein Schatz er doch ist!

time seems to fly so i am just quickly posting latest works.
by now most leaves have fallen, autumn has come to an end.
never the less the warm temperatures are great, especially for our
house reno- the concrete walls are poured and the floor will be soon.

die Zeit verfliegt so schnell, dass ich nur kurz meine neuen Bilder einstelle.
nun sind auch die meisten Blaetter von den Bauemen gefallen, der Herbst ist vorueber.
nichts desto trotz sind die warmen Temperaturen wundervoll, im speziellen fuer
unsere Haus Reno- die Betonwaende im Keller sind gegossen und der Boden kommt dann auch
bald.

Beide Bilder hier malte ich bei einer Freundin deren Grundstuck direkt am Meer liegt (www.estatestcroix.ca) , ich ging zum malen und sie hat auf die Kinder aufgepasst- wunderbar! Danke! trotzdem musste ich schnell arbeiten, da es zu schneien begann und die Farbe recht 'steif' wurde.

Last of the summer's hotties, watercolour, 4x11in, 10x28cm Aquarell, 60$

almost a month has passed since my last blog entry.
why? we are doing major reno on our restaurant and inn which is also our home.
it all started as: before the winter we need to get the roof redone, and replace a few
windows in our appartement.
however what we ended up is: the whole front fassade and some
of the side got ripped, structural corner beams reinforced, pink and styrofoam insulation installed, all new windows, shindles (hand dipped;-)
and at the back of the building,
which used to be the first catholic church 200 some years ago, new basement walls, foundation work, side walls ripped open- beeing also insulated and the whole back of the building beeing now developed into rooms 'etc'. for our inn. (yes, it's a BIG house)
on the painting end of things am i working right now on some
commissions and try to tie loose ends for our annual
'open house and Celebration of Art' at Europa Inn on december 5th, 9am-4pm.

seit meinem letzten Blogeintrag ist nun fast schon ein ganzer Monat vergangen.
warum? wir sind im grossen Stil am Renovieren/Expandieren an unserem Restaurant mit Pension, welches auch user Zuhause ist.
Geplant war: Vor dem Winter muss noch das Dach erneuert werden, und ein paar Fenster in unserem Appartement. Hingegen lief es darauf hinaus: die gesamte Frontseite und Teil der Hausseite wurden runtergerissen, tragende Eckbalken neu verstaerkt, pink und Styropor Isolierung installiert, und komplett neue Fenster, Schindeln (hand getunkt) vorn. und am hinteren Teil des grossen Gebaudes, welches eine katholische Kirche war vor etwa 200 Jahren: neuer Keller, Waende und Boden, Seitenwaende aufgerissen (ein 6x6meter grosses loch, dass der Bagger reinfahren kann)- weches auch komplett Isoliert wird und neue Zimmer 'und mehr' geben wird fuer unsere Pension (ja, unser Haus ist ganz schoen gross)
Mal-technisch arbeite ich an einigen Auftragsbildern und versuche Bilder fertigzustellen fuer unsern jaehrlichen 'Tag der offenen Tuer' mit Kunstausstellung
am Samstag, 5. Dezember, 9-16 Uhr

first prize at 'art of food' competition

St. Andrews Sunbury Shores Arts and Nature Center, advertised a juried art competition with the theme: the art of food.
i loved the theme, but knew it would be hard to participate, as most of my 'food' paintings were sold over the summer months and starting new ones might be tricky with a newborn, two older children and our restaurant still going 7 days a week...
so i tried, i had this idea to paint a painting to be hung in my husbands restaurant kitchen, something bright and cheery, depicting the work in a restaurant...
i started this painting after having Mathias, my third child, a little over a month ago.
at the award night, i barely made it to he opening in time, but felt very honoured and joyous to be awarded first prize- the Cooke Aquaculture Award! Thank You!

'Our love of food- serving YOU'- acrylic on canvas, 24x40in, 60x100cm

St. Andrews Sunbury Shores Center fuer Kunst schrieb einen Kunstwettbewerb aus mit dem Thema 'the art of food'. Ein Motto ganz nach meinem Geschmack, aber ich wusste dass es nicht leicht sein wuerde mitzumachen, da die meisten meiner 'food' bilder ueber die Sommermonate verkauft wurden und neue Bilder anzufangen- mit einem Neugeborenen, zwei weiteren Kindern und unserem Restaurant noch 7 Tage/ Woche geoeffnet- wuerde eine echte Herausforderung darstellen... ich versuchte es, hatte ich doch eine Idee ein Bild zu malen fuer die Restaurant Kueche meines Mannes, es sollte etwas buntes, froehliches sein, das die Arbeit in einem Restaurant darstellt... so fing ich also das Bild an, nachdem unser Mathias geboren war, unser drittes Kind, vor etwas mehr als einem Monat. Um so mehr habe ich mich gefreut und geehrt gefuehlt den ersten Preis ueberreicht zu bekommen- den 'Cooke Aquaculture Award'! Vielen Dank!

Mathias is a cutie and our whole family loves him.
of course every little baby has some adjusting to do- (along with the family members),
but i hope to be up and running to a certain degree very soon;-)

aber ich hoffe, dass ich bald wieder etwas geregelte Zeit habe zum malen;-)

Sorry for not posting in a while- as the photo shows,
i am waiting for the arrival of our new baby- any day now!
still i am painting almost daily.

all paintings listed are mixed from the three primary colours, 'hansa yellow light', 'red rose deep (Quinacridone), 'phthalo blue' (all Da Vinci Brand)

The pigment i let dry for a couple of days on the palette before painting, which eliminates too much pigment on the brush and good portion control...
As Brushes i used- as always' chinese 'sumi e' brushes as they hold a good load of pigment without loosing their exquisit tip- i only need one brush to do the whole painting!
For 'Apples and Art' i used a 'hake' brush as well, to cover bigger areas loose and fast.

Alle Bilder hier habe ich mit den drei Primaerfarben gemalt: 'hansa yellow light', 'red rose deep (quinacridone) und 'phthlalo Blau'

(sorry, kenne die richtigen deutschen namen nicht;-)- Alle von 'Da Vinci'.
die Farben habe ich in der Palette erst ein, zwei Tage trocknen lassen, damit ich nicht zuviel Pigment auf einmal aufnehme und gut portionieren kann... als Pinsel verwende ich einen Chinesischen 'sumi e' Echthaar Pinsel- die halten eine gute Ladung Farbe ohne dabei ihre wunderbare Spitze zu verlieren- da brauche ich nur einen einzigen Pinsel um ein ganzes Bild zu malen. Fuer 'Apples and Art' habe ich auch zusaetzlich einen 'Hake' Pinsel verwendet. Der ist grossflaechig, Echthaar, und ist gut um schnell grosse Flaechen zu decken.

Fundy Artists Show

the last four days 8 local artists presented their works at the annual 'Fundy Artists' Show and Sale at the Fairmont Algonquin Casino. and i was invited again to take part in it...
the number of visitors was steady and sales were good.
my fellow artists that took part this year were: Pat Staples, the organizer; Paula Cooper-Bertke, Barbara Neilson, Bertha Day, Morag Walsh, Carolyn Cherry and Rand Marsters.
it was lots of fun catching up with the other artists and talking to the visitors.
i am looking forward to next year!

Die vergangenen 4 Tage 8 einheimische Kuenstler presentierten ihre Werke in der jaehrlichen Ausstellung: Fundy Artists im Fairmont Algonquin Casino. Auch ich wurde wieder eingeladen mitzumachen....
the Besucherzahlen waren stetig und viele Bilder fanden neue Besitzer;-)
meine Mitaussteller dieses Jahr waren: Pat Staples, die Organisatorin des Events; Paula Cooper-Bertke, Barbara Neilson, Morag Walsh, Bertha Day, Rand Marsters und Carolyn Cherry.
Es war toll mit den Anderen Kuenstlern und den Besuchern zu plaudern.
Ich freu mich schon auf's naechste Jahr!

with the last days of my present exhibition coming up after the weekend,
i'd like to thank Sara Sparks from the Gillmor's Coach House Gallery in
St. George for her collaboration. thank you!
it was a wonderful experience to have this solo-show and see so many
people stop by to view it- thank you all! i am thrilled and also humbled by
the support shown...
from the 20 paintings on display, 12 have sold so far, which i feel very honoured
about.

Fuer mich war diese Einzel-ausstellung ein tolles Erlebnis- mit so vielen Besuchern
und Freunden, die sie besucht haben- vielen Dank euch allen!

with my pregnancy progressing into the few last weeks, i am feeling bigger by the day, hence my painting energy seems to dwindle a little… however i am still pushing as my upcoming show july29-august 1st, 2009 at the fairmont algonquin is coming fast… so far, i have held up my endeavor to paint every day… here a little update of my finished ones;-)

Da meine Schwangerschaft sich nun langsam dem Ende naehert (33 Wochen), komme ich mir taeglich noch umfangreicher vor, so verlangsamt sich auch meine Malausdauer etwas… trotzdem male ich taeglich- mein Vorhaben an mich selbst bis ende des monats- denn unsere jaehrliche Show ist schon bald: Fundy Artists- Juli 29- August1, 2009, Fairmont Algonquin Casino.
