Collector's Pics

Christmas updates from my collectors:

It ALWAYS makes my day when I receive Collectors Pics of my paintings in their new home.
This year a couple of people sent in these pics of the paintings under their Christmas trees. I see it as a great honour being included and getting a glimpse where my paintings find their home.
I was so busy tending to commissioned paintings that I didn't have a lot of time to post on my blog in December, so I hope to thread in in the next few weeks what has happened last month in my 'studio' (actually my easel is pitched in my living room by the warm fire, haha).

If you have been following my blog, you have seen above painting before. You can read the story behind this painting in the blog post by clicking here.
And the painting below was purchased by a sweet husband who wanted to surprise his darling wife. I had painted the Winnebago Cabover Painting as part of my 'camper a day' project this past September. He called me up mid December and I got the painting on its way right in time for Christmas. I am smiling as I see how lovingly it is placed! You collectors of mine are theee best, thank you! I appreciate each one of you so very much! You keep me painting and pushing my limits to become better at what I love to do! Thank you!!!

Cold Snap

Have I mentioned it was cold here in the Maritimes the last couple of weeks? Below are some photos from the St. Andrews wharf I took just a few days ago. The sea smoke on the water is a sure fire indication that it is a verrrryyy cold day.

My painting day today

We are expecting a 'snow bomb' to explode here in the Maritimes tomorrow. Markus and the people of St. Andrews have been busy getting their houses ready. I hope people will stay home and stay away from the roads. Here this was the view from the wharf this afternoon. Isn't it beautiful? I started a painting, but couldn't quite finish due to frozen cold fingers. Will post about that in the next few days sometime. Hope to finish some last touches, maybe tomorrow. St. Andrews Waterfront View Wharf winter simone-ritter-art-St-andrews-wharf-waterfront-view-whalewatching-hut-lobster-boat-sunset-2018
Thanks for taking time to visit, and stay in touch again tomorrow.

1963 Arrow Duplex Cabover

1963 Arrow Duplex Caboverorig. watercolor, 8x10in (matted to fit 11.14in frame)more info and purchase, click here

Welcome to today's 1963 Arrow Duplex Cabover. The step-up tiny camping home for the person who needs a bit more space (or has more kids, haha).

This one here is a 1963, almost 55 years old! I'd love to look this good when I'm 55, just sayin'!

Here is what its proud owner shared with me: "This is my camper Flo. We have a lot of fun because I just 'go with the Flo.'" Some comments make my day, and this was one of those! Thank you very much for sending in your darling Flo for us all to smile with you!

I am posting this, yawning. So tired today. This weekend I was out and about painting at Kings Landing Historic Settlement at their annual plein air fundraiser. The other artists attending are fun to be around with and really, as creating art is kind of a solitary endeavor, it feels special to paint alongside likeminded. We stayed at the bunkhouse where they host the summer camp kids. You can guess how well I slept, haha!
I will share some of the paintings created with you once the month and my camper project is over. If you are interested in looking at the exhibit and enjoy a wonderful fall excursion, you can head to Kings Landing until October 9th, 2017 before they close for the season.

1966 Shasta 1500 'Free'

1966 Shasta 1500 'Free'
orig. watercolor 8x10in (archivally matted to fit 11x14in frame)

This 1966 Shasta 1500 'Free' is my feature camper today. I love its patriotic set up! It's proud owner shares her love for her country and lovingly decorated this little Shasta in Stars and Stripes.
Growing up in Germany, there was very little display of national pride as in flags or banners or such (except for soccer events and other global sports competitions where the Germans won). I think after WW2 the whole national pride thing got ushered out the door and instead of flags and banners, people measured their pride in accomplishments.

When we arrived first here in Canada in 2000, I have to admit that I felt almost a sense of bewilderment when I saw all the flags proudly flying at every street corner and many homes. I have come to appreciate it over the years. The flag is an outward sign that unites a people, even if they don't agree on much else besides. A love for their country and a sense of a kind of nationwide brotherhood is best displayed every year during July 1st, the national holiday.

'Flying their colors'

I see the same with my US friends. We live close to the US border and even more than the Canadians, the US residents love to share their love for their country in flying their colors.
By now, I am a bit saddened when I don't see the flags in Germany when we visit. But I understand. And being humble has not often been a bad trait. Germans as far as I can say, as a people, are not wired that way, haha. Their open-ness often comes across as frank and direct and you have no idea how often I have stepped in a pot of grease by just talking out loud- especially here with the polite Canadians! Yup, still learning that 'silence is golden'- maybe I should just get myself a flag instead, haha)
Thanks for journeying with me, I will be here again tomorrow with another camper, so stop on by anytime;-) Until then,
Happy Trails! Simone

Blueberry Fields Forever Commission Painting

Blueberry Fields Forever #3

commission, sold

I hope this post finds you all well after a wonderful Christmas celebration and/or some relaxing days!
Before Christmas I have been contacted by a person who fell in love with my paintings, Blueberry Fields Forever. After some email conversations, he ordered a similar painting to the ones he saw online- as a commission Christmas surprise for his wife. I hope she liked it, he really wanted to get her something personal and from the heart. They live close to the area portrayed in the paintings.
The local wild blueberry fields really do turn a bright red once the fall frosts hit them. This creates a stunning contrast with the dark blue ever-green trees in the distance.

Blueberry Fields Forever #5

orig. watercolour, 6x8in approx.

more info and purchase: click here

As part of the commission, I have painted a total of three paintings! I wanted to make sure he found just the right one for his space. The two others are available now via my webshop.

Blueberry Fields Forever #4

orig. watercolour 6x8in approx., matted to 11x14in

more info and purchase: click here

This one above I painted on hot press paper which yields a more fluid look and the colours are a touch brighter. Different materials yield different results as you can see!
On a private note, we had a great celebration with the kids. On the 25th we had the restaurant open again and our darling daughter helped even serve and be the host for the evening. I myself helped Markus in the kitchen a bit. It has become a tradition and our Europa team is so gracious to come and serve on Christmas Day! Thank you all for making this possible!
Stay in touch with more recent paintings I have created but had no time to post!

Red VW Camper

more info and purchase: please click here

Today's post is about this darling red VW Camper. It was parked at our campground this summer and the owners are local people! This old VW is not road worthy anymore. The owners have her towed each year to the campground for an annual VW meet! How cool is this?! The rest of the year, she resides in their backyard as a special guest. The owners have lived in her for months at a time  and travelled the continent living full-time in this tiny camper! Yeah, the good ol' times!
I couldn't resist painting it, but didn't have time this summer. But now with the camper-a-day just over, I had to get going and include her in the voting for my 2017 Vintage Camper Calendar.
Oh, yes,the voting: Please stop on over to the Voting Page and 'like' your favorite paintings from the September Camper Painting project! Voting is open to all and I'd like to know from you which paintings you'd like to see in the calendar! There will be a give-away as well:

1964 SCS Shasta in a Field of Roses

orig. watercolor 11x14in (matted onto a 16x20 archival matboard)

for more info and purchase: please click here

Yes, we've had a whole bunch of Aqua Shasta's this month! It must be a very popular color!
This one here I call 1964 SCS Shasta in a Field of Roses.
I chose this one as I liked that vintage truck with it, so cute. And as the fall is here now in the Maritimes with colder nights and crisp air in the mornings, I liked the warm sunshine drenching this scene. Summer- where art though??? I miss you already!

This is s special Shasta as the owner explains:

'1964 SCS Shasta, the SCS stands for "Self-Contained with a Shower", I call her "Super Cute Shasta"'
A couple of days ago, we had another aqua colored Shasta, featuring a pinup girl. You can read about it by clicking here.
I'm off to bed now, as tomorrow we have a busy day ahead of us: my youngest fledgling is starting hockey and will be in hockey gear the first time! You should see the huge mount of gear I just packed! Unbelievable! Those hockey players are dressed like tanks! I quietly had hoped that this cup would pass by us, but once he heard about hockey sign up, he really wanted to give it a try. So, here we go, you might see me post hockey sketches soon!
I hope you enjoyed this month filled with campies and I thank you very much for journeying with me! Thank you, thank you! If you like a camper, please feel free to share the post or photo to your social feeds! But we'll see you tomorrow with another camper- end stretch for me!
I'm wishing you a great day and thanks for stopping by!               Simone

1961 Shasta Camper Aqua Pinup

1961 Shasta Camper Aqua Pinup

orig. watercolor, 11x14in approx. (set in a16x20in archival matboard)

more info and purchase: please click here

Today's feature camper is another Shasta! This 1961 Shasta Camper in Aqua features a darling pinup, too... It is called 'Vintage Love'! Today, I actually wanted to paint a different camper, but the owner went the extra mile and submitted her darling twice to make sure I get it, right early after my asking for submissions- so, how could I not?
Here is what she writes: 'I wanted to enter my sweet refinished 61 Shasta , Vintage Love in your contest !! I created The Glampers of Virginia page and belong to a lot of the other great sites for our fabulous campers.'
There are quite a few more submissions in my email account which I won't be able to squeeze into this month. I am so sorry but hope to being able to paint as I have time. My theme this time was, first come, first painted, just to be fair. Still, I think there was a good selection of shapes and sizes and themes, and it was fun to open my email every day and open the next email to my my day's camper!
This coming month there will be the voting where you can participate to select your fav 13 for next year's calendar! I hope you all will be on board and  help me out! October project, here we come!

Also, there will be a special surprise announcement for all the campers that got painted this September. Something I had not originally thought possible, but stoked to share with you October 1st;-) Stay tuned!

I invite you to share this post with your friends and on your feeds! Thank you- and we'll see you tomorrow again with another Camper of the Day!                             Simone

Red Shasta with Wings

Red Shasta with Wings

orig. watercolor painting 10x13in approx. (matted to 16x20 archival mat)

purchase info: click here

Today's campie is this cute red Shasta with it's iconic wings. The wings are a signature part of it and many collectors buy new or old wings on Ebay for big bucks. If selling your Shasta, it is an extra bonus if yours still has the wings, which makes it very recognizable to everyone.
The attention to detail from manufacturers way back was wonderful. The tiny Shasta Compact models have shorter wings, versus the longest deluxe models have longer wings- to go with the overall look. So, if you buy your wings, get them the right size, haha!
This painting today was a bit of a free-styler, as the submission photo was quite small and so I painted from a 1.5 inch by 2 inch photograph. I thought to myself that this will be a good exercise in putting down what I already know about this particular camper and incorporate all the info I was able to see on the small reference.
As you probably know by now, I love red in the campers and so I surely did enjoy my exercise today!
Thank you for stopping by and hope to see you tomorrow again with a new camper-a-day! All the best to you!              Simone

purchase info: click here

Ok, girls, if you want to glamp, but the boys in the family are hesitant to venture out in you pink beauty... you might want to consider something like this here. This camper is so cool. My guys would love it! I would love it, too- the bits and pieces that make it a true glamper are all there- the bunting, the striped awning, the sweet touches here and there- just perfect! Congrats on making today's feature camper a fun and very unique glamper!

Here is what its proud owner writes:

'Hello, this is my 1978 Apache Yuma It came to me on my birthday this June and I have been working hard to make him special It's a hard sided pop-up with the unique feature of the slide out kitchen His name is Louie Clark!'
As you might know, today I'll be painting at the historic 'Kings Landing' Settlement for a fundraiser Plein Air Event. If you are in the area this weekend, please do stop by! I'd love to welcome you!
You will still see every day a new campie, as I prepared before I went, ha ha! And if you like, please do share the link with friends and family and your fb group! Thank you for stopping by today!      Simone

1950 Westcraft Coronado

1950 Westcraft Coronado

purchase info: click here

'Hi! This is my 1950 Westcraft Coronado that I restored and love to camp in!
Hope you like her as much as I do!'

this was the introduction I received with this stunning vintage camper. Isn't it a stunner?
I have  a heart for the old, old ones, they are just so luxurious, long and spacious- kind of a travelling home. It would be my dream to own one some day! But here by the ocean, the salt in the air and mist would corrode any non aluminum part pretty fast. So, I enjoy looking at the beauties that are being restored and loved in dryer regions of the continent!
In the last few days, I have gone on a journey to different states of the US, from temperate climate just like home to hot and dry . I am looking forward to showing you more different campies in the coming days, it will be great!
I received a wonderful selection of very different campers. Thank you all who participate and walk this journey with me- sending in photos, encouraging comments or liking and clicking on my Facebook and Instagram feeds. Thank you so much!
As you read this, I am packing my car to head out to a Plein Air Event at the historic Settlement 'Kings Landing'. I will meet other artists and paint for two days and interact with the visitors. It will end Sunday evening with a showing and sale of all the artists' work. If you are in the Fredericton region and look for a fun event- please come and say 'hi'! I'd love to see you there!
Never the less, there will be a camper of the day tomorrow, so please do stop by and check it out!
... and if you like what you see, please share the link on your social feeds and Pinterest! I'd feel honoured! Thank you!                    stay in touch! Simone

1968 Scotty 'Wildflower' Summer

1968 Scotty 'Wildflower' Summer

orig. watercolor painting 11x14in approx. (matted size: 16x20in)

purchase info: click here

Some camper owners are taking part in my camper-a-day project more than once. They send in different photos of their camper or re-submit the photos if I didn't get around to getting their campie painted the first time around. Today we have such a camper who I have painted before. Her name is Wildflower and she is a 1968 Serro Scotty.
I'd say along with the Shasta make, the Scotties are among the most beloved and available names out there in vintage camper land. These here have a distinct aqua color (except the very last years of production) and often this dome-shaped top. You can see the painting of Christmas -Glamp Wildflower by clicking here.

A bit about this painting:

I tried to push the white siding colour towards a sunny yellow with this painting, reflecting the warm colors around it. I like colorful shadows, especially when the subject is so whimsy as this camper. A general rule of thumb in the art world is, that shadows may be painted with lots of colors when the surrounding is not very colorful (example: bright sunlight washing out colors from the surrounding objects), and other way around, keep the shadows more neutral when there is lots of colour happening around (often on overcast days). Of course, we are here in art, so every rule is there to be broken- with gusto! Cheers to that!
1968 Scotty 'Wildflower' Summer
The owner of 'Wildflower' actually was the one that submitted the photo for her glamper friend who just got her diagnosis of cancer. You can read about the story here. By the way, the friend will start full treatment of the very aggressive cancer within the next days. She is in fighting mode now- she has to! I will keep you in my prayers!
Let's stay in touch and see what my camper model will be tomorrow! Thanks for stopping by!

1960's Shasta Compact 'Little Wings'

orig. watercolor painting, 10x13in approx.
purchase info: click here
Ha, lucky me, I painted my own campie and it is my featured camper of the day!
It was a hunter's special (Canadian term for, well, campers that are past their prime and can happily be used to go huntin' in the bush without worry of damaging something precious). Many Canadian Vintage Camper fans are searching online listings on Kijiji (similar to Craigslist) and stop for the 'bargain word' mentioned above. Yes, this is my little hunter's special and I am so glad I found it!
I don't know the exact year, so I say it is a 1968 as this is the year my husband was born- it makes people laugh! I plan on keeping it that way until I find its real vintage somewhere hidden 'underneath' or 'in between'.
Since I got it last June, I have enjoyed many outings in it and met a lot of interesting people over it. I have put some sweat into getting 'Little Wings', my 1960's Shasta Compact back into shape, but still have some items on my to-do list for the coming months. It is a work-in-progress as many things in my life, haha!

This painting I have painted on location, from life. I have mentioned before, I love painting from life, it get's my skills sharpened and I enjoy being outdoors. Too bad I don't burn many calories sitting on my chair painting... oh, well, cannot have everything!

Thank you for stopping by today and your interest in my Camper-a-Day project. I hope it makes you smile.

If you would like to submit your own camper photo, please do so here. Would love to hear from you!

Long Eddy Lighthouse

Long-Eddy-Lighthouse_Simone-Ritter-Art_2016_watercolour_5x7in

'Long Eddy Lighthouse', Grand Manan, NB

orig. watercolour 5x7in approx
On Display May 6-20, Sunbury Shores, St. Andrews, Canada
'Inspirations- Man Made and Human'

Today's Lighthouse is the Long Eddy Lighthouse on Grand Manan.
If you love nature and still pretty undiscovered coastline, visiting this island is for you!
Located in the Bay of Fundy, a 1.5 hour ferry ride from the main land, Grand Manan Island is still dominated by the fishing industry. You see lots of wharfs, fishing huts, windy roads, fishermen working, rustic clapboard houses, undisturbed nature and wild coast lines.

View from our cottage, the moon rising

Grand Harbour Light (Ross Island LIght) has since collapsed, so sad..

You can see many working wharfs

Some days are foggy but warm, making for moody scenery

long, undiscovered beaches

in the distance you can see the fog rolling in-and-out

I have enjoyed painting the scenery during every visit I made- smelling the salt air, listening to the fog horns in the distance, buoys with bells that warn of shallow waters, purple wildflowers swaying in the breeze and the simple pleasure of staying right by the water in a small, rustic cottage, roasting marsh mallows in a fire right by the beach- what could be more calming and beautiful to the heart!? Plein air artists have enjoyed the wild romantic setting and come year after year to soak in, create and capture its beauty on canvas to share with the world.
My dad and kids enjoying fire by the beach
The summers are short here on the Canadian East Coast, and even shorter on the Islands around it. But man, do they put on a show! If you get a chance, take time to discover them! Bring your camper or rent a cottage (and with the US dollar so strong, Americans really get a steal of a deal this year travelling to Canada).
I've included some photos of my trips to the island to whet your appetite;-) thanks for stopping by!

Claris Caravan- Another Date with This New Zealand Beauty

Claris Caravan Simone-Ritter-Art_2016_watercolour_camper

Claris Caravan

orig. watercolour 5x7
more info and purchase: click here
Who do we have today? May I introduce Claris Caravan, almost would I call her an 'old friend'. She is from New Zealand and quite busy socializing as event prop and business venture extraordinaire. She does get quite a bit of publicity, too. Her proud owner has a sensible touch in decorating her, just enough, not too much. I love the beach-ey feel, the hot sun shining through the set up. Just the right thing for the colder regions that are longing for spring- like me!!! I have painted her before, last year, and you can see the blogpost about that by clicking here
We here have a relatively mild winter so far... hm, I better not write that actually, it might turn on me!!!
I'm inching myself up towards the end of this month's camper a day challenge and I hope it brought you some smiles and joy- it certainly was a fun start for this new year for me, kind of a celebration! My first camper a day I did last January, exclusively with Canadian campers. Here is the collage I did featuring all of them:Vintage_Camper_Portraits_Collage_Simone-Ritter-Art_2015
I am planning to do a collage again featuring all campers from this month, including Claris Caravan and all the other darlings. Special thanks to artist Leslie Saeta for hosting this January painting challenge again! It is always fun and so great to see hundreds of artists worldwide participate!
It is getting late (again), so I better hang up until tomorrow, nighty night all.                Simone

1966 Scotty in Coral Pink Metallic

1966 Scotty in Coral Pink Metallic

original watercolour painting 5x7in approx.
more info and purchase: click here
Here we have it, another late-nighter for me... but what's not to like if it's a coral-ey pink and then in metallic even?
I enjoyed painting it a lot and adding the flamingos and adirondack chairs (which are always a bit tricky to get the perspective right- at least that is for me). Today was smooth sailing and this painting came to life as the paint just seemed to flow from the brush onto the paper in just the right places.
Now I'm off to bed and so I leave you with best wishes for a relaxing Sunday and I hope you get to enjoy a good day of rest. I shall be here again tomorrow with another campie!  Thanks for stopping by and see you tomorrow!                 Simone

Isn't today's camper a cowgirl's dream? This time around I've been painting quite a few 'cool chick' glampers and today's featured model is no exception! I love the earthy colours, that go so fittingly with the cowgirl theme. I really enjoyed this painting, the trailer is so cute and small!
I keep is short today, but hope you had a good day and as we are in the middle of a snowstorm here in Eastern Canada, I'm happy to paint warm weather colours and campers! My own 'Little wings' is in its winter storage now- just in time! Yey!
To all of you out there in the snow: stay safe; and all of you enjoying warm temperatures- my thoughts are with you and where you are as I'm flipping through vacation trip offers online, ha ha! See you tomorrow, blessings to you!                               Simone

Blueberry Fields Forever and my NEW WEBSITE!

Blueberry Fields Forever #1

Well, we don't have many strawberry fields here in New Brunswick, Canada, but many, many blueberry fields. Of course, we are bordering Maine, US, so well known for their wild blueberries.
Here is what Wikipedia says: Atlantic Canada contributes approximately half of the total North American wild/lowbush (blueberry) annual production of 68,000 t (150,000,000 lb).
When we drive up to the city (Saint John), we drive by lovely red blueberry fields near St. George. The leaves turn flaming red in the fall and early winter, really wonderful. I drove by this field so many times thinking I should paint this especially with the one evergreen Tree growing in the middle of the field. So, now I finally did it! I am so glad I did, the paintings came so easy, it was a pure joy to paint them. Sometimes painting a painting is almost like tug-of-war, back and forth and back and forth until in the end I'm so exhausted I have to walk away... strange, isn't it? But here is was wonderfully relaxing, the paint stayed wet just long enough to blend in deeper, richer mixes and the red over orange mingled do smoothly.
Anyhow, enough talk, I hope you enjoy the paintings- I enjoyed painting them VERY much!
On another note: More and more of my Christmas Gift Products are coming in, in my BRAND NEW WEBSITE you find my brand new book, calendars, gift tags and greeting cards... I hope you will take a moment to stop over! www.simoneritterart.com or subscribe to my newsletter- all subscribers will receive a gift in the next edition!

more info and purchase: click here

Isn't this a cute glamper?? My daughter thinks pink is the best, so here we go, may I introduce: Little Miss PitStop, a Serro Scotty and matching pink scooter Pepto. She even has her own facebook page! you can check it out by clicking here.
I painted this watercolor painting on Friday while waiting at my kids' school for them to finish their week. The management is very generous and has a room for me at the school where I am free to paint, work on the computer or sketch while waiting for the kidlets. Now I look forward to the Fridays and to painting!
Do you have special rituals that make your waiting for weekend more enjoyable?
See you Soon! Simone

Simone

A Happy Thanksgiving I'm sending to you! Our family spent the afternoon at New River Beach where Markus flew his RC planes and the kids kept busy playing in the sand and surf while mom (me) enjoyed painting these two watercolour paintings.
Tomorrow it is 'back to school' for the kidlets after a long weekend, I enjoy the drive in the mornings seeing the fall colours and the fog lifting from the meadows, a magical time of year. If you are looking for something fun to do next weekend, check out St. Andrews' 'Indulge Festival' with all good food all over town; from wine trail to gourmet dinners to Taste of St. Andrews food trail. There is something for everyone, if you haven't stopped down for it yet, maybe this year will just be the perfect time to start!

A couple of weeks ago, I posted a work-in-progress commission for a client that had purchased a painting in 2008 and was looking for some companion pieces. I have just finished the commission and they are already on the way home to Toronto. Here are the paintings:

Flower Medley- 3 piece
acrylic on canvas 24x54in total
commission, sold

Happy Thanksgiving from the Ritters- enjoying the day at New River Beach, NB
