I hope you had a great Christmas this year! In our house it was a bit different. My husband came down with a bug and was sick to his stomach for a full 24 hours. He spent his Christmas 'talking to the big, white phone' as he so calls it. Poor dude. We even had to cancel our annual pay-what-you-want dinner that day! It was pretty upsetting (pun intended;-).
So, on Boxing Day I decided to head out with my oil paints to capture the low afternoon sun at low tide. However, I never made it out to Indian Point. Once I saw the beautiful interplay of shapes and colours in the homes lining Water Street, I just had to pitch my easel there. Hence the title Christmas Snow St Andrews.
Smart me, I dressed warm and had hand warmers with me. The temperatures dropped as I was painting the afternoon away and by the time I was done, my toes were really cold and the finger tips nippy. However, the oil paints stayed great, got a bit more sticky maybe, but overall, a great performance. In contrast, when I venture out with my watercolour, painting is very different. There my paint freezes inside the palette and onto the brush (even with water being replaced with vodka or other high percentage clear spirit of sorts).

Today I'm posting this small plein air study that I painted a few weeks back during a one-day-workshop.

Somehow, there was so much other things going on that I didn't find the time to paint a camper! For once, my dear Schatzi took me out to dinner, which was long overdue. It was the perfect mini-vacation for the two of us as we enjoyed a nice lunch at the local Niger Reef Tea House right by the water.  Here is a selfie taken afterwards on our stroll along the water.

Also, my friend called to ask for me to come along digging some clams for dinner. So, as the sun was shining I couldn't say 'no'.  We worked hard, but they made for a yummy dinner!

I hope tomorrow I'll be back on track and can paint again a sweet vintage camper trailer.

Today I was waiting at a local airport and saw this little one parked in the grassy area next to the entry gate. I snuck in and painted it.

It was a very hot day here but the breeze felt great on the skin.

Tomorrow is first day of school again for the kidlets, I am looking forward to some extra time for painting, housework and time with my dear Markus, who has been working so much this summer at our restaurant/inn. Strange, we live where our business is, but I hardly see him all summer... I'm looking forward to fall!

Heute wartete ich beim hiesigen Flugplatz und sah dieses kleine Flugzeug im Gras geparkt beim Eingangstor. Ich schlich mich rein und malte es. Es war sehr heiss heute aber der Wind fuehlte sich gut auf der Haut an.

Morgen ist bei uns erster Schultag fuer die Kinder, ich freu mich auf extra Zeit zum malen, Haus aufraeumen und Zeit mit meinem Schatz Markus zu verbringen, der so viele Stunden diesen Sommer in unserem Restaurant/Pension arbeitet. Komisch, wir wohnen ueber unserem Geschaeft, aber ich seh ihn kaum den ganzen Sommer lang... jetzt freut's mich auf Herbst!

I'm coming to an end with Leslie Saeta's January painting challenge. It has been a lot of fun and I learned a lot- thank you for walking along with me!
The weather was so beautiful here in St. Andrews today, I just couldn't stay indoors. There is a big snow hill down by the wharf where the town ploughs dump loads of snow into a high hill- my kids look forward to this every year and today we trotted down to have some winter fun with toboggans and me with my oil paint set.
For the camper sketch I started dabbling away at a few days ago, not a finished piece, but maybe an idea for a later painting...

Ich komme zum Ende mit Leslie Saeta's Januar 30 Bilder in 30 Tagen- Projekt. Es hat viel Spass gemacht und ich lernte viel- vielen Dank dass ihr mit mir gegangen seid.
Das Wetter war heute so wunderschoen in St. kAndrews, dass ich einfach raus musste! Da ist ein grosser Schneehaufen unten an der Anlagestelle wo die Schneeraeumfahrzeuge den gesammelten Schnee auf einen grossen Haufen aufschuetten. Meine Kinder freuen sich jedes Jahr darauf und so gingen wir heute runter zur Anlegestelle: die Kiddos mit ihren Schlitten und ich mit meiner Malausruestung.
Das Campingbild habe ich schon vor ein paar Tagen angefangen, nicht ein fertiges Gemaelde, mehr ein Sketch, vielleicht wird es mal eine Vorlage fuer ein spaeters Bild...

Hier ist ein letztes Bild das ich diesen Sommer gemalt habe, während des Malkurses mit Michael Chesley Johnson. Bäume sind schon was wunderschönes und all zu oft läuft man einfach an ihnen vorbei ohne ihre Schönheit zu bewundern. Dieser Ahornbaum ist nahe dem Wasser, beim Kayakverleih und Tauchshop. Little Bug revisited

After painting the little red bug a few days ago, I so wanted to paint it from the backside. 
So I packed my paints and kids and set up again by the beetle bug.
I rang the doorbell to ask for permission and the owner, a very nice man shared stories and gave chocolate candy to my kids. Needless to say, the Ritter Critters had a party climbing the trees and running about (making for a noisy place to paint, haha).
But here it is, I just loved painting it!      Happy weekend!                       Simone

Nachdem ich den kleinen roten Käfer vor ein paar Tagen gemalt habe, wollte ich unbedingt noch die Rückansicht malen. So packte ich meine Farben und Kinder und baute mein Set-up auf.
Ich klingelte noch vorher an der Haustür um nach Erlaubnis zu fragen, und der Besitzer sagte gleich ja und erzählte seine Geschichten vom VW Käfer und wie er sie früher zu Duenenbuggies umgebaut hat. Meine Kinder bekamen Schokolade. Ganz klar hatte ich dann eine laute Party um mich rum mit Baumklettern, Fankus, usw... Aber hier ist nun der kleine Käfer wieder, es hat viel Spass gemacht!

Friday was my cleaning and organizing day as the kids fetched a full day at daycare. We had some schooling left to do in the morning, but as soon as 'the air was clear' (aka: kids out of the house) I headed straight for the kids' rooms to re-organize, sort and clean... 6 hours later I have had it and packed my paints and headed to that little house near the college with the little Beetle Bug Volkswagen outside.  I had my eye on it to paint it for quite a while;-) Does not everyone have a memory with a Beetle Bug in it? What is your Beetle story?

Am Freitag war mein Putz- und Organisiertag weil die Kinder einen ganzen Tag in der Kita unterkommen konnten. Wir hatten nur am morgen noch ein paar Schulsachen zu erledigen aber alsbald die 'Luft rein war' (Kinder aus'm Haus) hab ich mich ans Werk geschwungen in den Kinderzimmern: Organisieren, sortieren, Grossputz... nach 6 Stunden hatte ich dann die Nase voll und packte meine Malsachen.
An der Berufsschule ist ein kleines Haus mit dem roten VW Käfer vorndraussen, auf den hab ich schon länger ein Auge geworfen... hat nicht jeder eine Erinnerung oder Geschichte mit einen VW Kaefer? Was ist deine Geschichte?

Day 12: Cottage Craft St. Andrews

Cottage Craft was a highly successful yarn, knitting and weaving business and is celebrating
it's 100th anniversary this year. The Ross Museum has a special whimsy exhibit downstairs which is worth seeing.

Das heutige Bild ist vom Cottage Craft Gebaeude, ein prominentes Gebaeude direkt am market square. Cottage Craft war ein sehr erfolgreiches Unternehmen, das hiesigen Frauen ein Einkommen bat mit Strickwaren, Garn- und Webarbeiten. Das Ross Muesum hat eine kleine aber feine Ausstellung dieses Jahr um den 100. Geburtstag von Cottage Craft zu feiern.

Day 9 of the 30-paintings-in-30-days challenge was spent in glorious sunshine at St. Andrews' Blockhouse. It actually started out with schooling and a homeschool group hike up Chamcook Mountain and a meet at the Blockhouse beach. The late summer sun felt so great with just a nip of crisp air. The other moms were chatting while I was painting along with my easel right in the middle and all the kids were playing by the canons, the beach and some tried to go into the (cold) water.
There is one smaller boat and when low tide it is stranded making for a great painting subject, too, but today was full high tide and she was dancing while I painted her.

Tag Nr. 9 von meinem 30-Tage-Projekt wurde gemalt im wunderschönen Sonnenschein beim Blockhaus von St. Andrews. Der Tag begann eigentlich mit Schule daheim und anschliessender Wanderung der Homeschoolgruppe, den Chamcook Berg hinauf und endete am Blockhausstrand.
Die Spaetsommersonne fühlte sich so wunderbar an mit einem klein bisschen kalt in der Luft.
Die anderen Muetter sassen im Gras, in Gesprächen vertieft während ich mitten unter ihnen meine Staffelei aufgebaut hatte und malte. Die Kinder spielten Fangen bei den Kanonen, am Strand und einige gingen sogar ins (kalte) Wasser. Es gibt ein kleineres Boot, das bei Ebbe gestrandet daliegt, aber heute war Flut und so schwamm sie fast schon tanzend auf den kleinen Wellen.

Today's painting I just finished! After we finished schooling (happy weekend all;-), the kids wanted to go to the playground. They had fun running and climbing and I started today's painting. After I had blocked in and just gained ground I heard that noise which made me crinch... I knew what was coming: a lawn tractor! I was all set-up in the middle of the green space and knew I had to move.
My kids were kind and helped re-locate, but by moving the easel, the painting tipped and fell into the palette- yikes! So, this was a good exercise in 'keeping focus', after all I could finish it from a distance where there was a nice shady spot. I'm off not to cook dinner for the 'gang', while Markus is busy, busy in the restaurant.   Thanks for stopping by!                              Simone

Jetzt habe ich gerade das heutige Bild fertig! Nachdem wir mit Schule fertig waren (frohes Wochenende;-), wollten die Kinder hoch zum Spielplatz. Während sie Spass hatten mit rennen und turnen fing ich mein heutiges Bild an. Nach einem zügigen Start hörte ich ein gewisses Geräusch das mich zusammenzucken liess: Rasentraktor! Ich hatte mich genau mittig auf der Grünfläche positioniert und wusste dass ich umziehen musste. Meine Kids waren echt suess und halfen mein Gebündel wegzutragen, aber als ich meine Pochade Staffelei wegtrug, fiel mein Bild geradewegs auf die Farbpalette- hiilllffeee! So, was ich heute gelernt habe: Fokus beibehalten und tief durchatmen auch wenn's mal nicht ganz glatt geht (ich muss gestehen, ich hatte ein paar böse Gedanken). Trotz allem war's OK denn ich fand ein schattiges Plätzchen etwas weiter weg wovon ich dann ganz gut fertigmalen konnte. Jetzt bin ich auf'm Weg in die Kueche: Abendessen kochen fuer die Kinder- Markus kocht noch auf Hochbetrieb im Restaurant.

Today another steeple: the Catholic Church of St. Andrew. It was a beautiful late summer day, very sunny and hot, with white clouds drifting by here and there. Sabrina is back from her trip to NJ and it was so sweet how she brought me water from time to time!

Heute nochmal ein Kirchturm Bild: Die katholische St. Andreas Kirche. Es war ein wunderschoener Spaetsommertag, sehr sonnig und warm, mit vorbeiziehenden Schaefchenwolken. Sabrina ist auch zurueck von ihrem New Jersey Urlaub und war so suess- hat mir kaltes Wasser zum trinken gebracht waehrend ich malte! Weiss jemand von wo ich das Bild aus gemalt habe?

30 paintings in 30 days- Day#1- Laundry Day at Rachel's house

September 1st: Today's the first day for my 30-paintings-in-30-days challenge (organized by Leslie Saeta, host of artists helping artists blog, an inspiring Blog/Talk Radio for artists),
also, it is the day before 'back to school' for many families.
This afternoon I was on the way out the door to paint by the wharf when the phone rang and my friend Rachel asked if our Mathias would like to come over to play outside. So, as I walked over I saw the bright coloured soccer t's hanging to dry and opted to paint this instead.
Thank you, Rachel for allowing me to paint! A fun start to a fun project! What's tomorrow??

1. September: Heute ist der erste Tag von '30-Bilder-in-30-Tagen', auch ist es der Tag vor dem 
Schulanfang hier in Canada.
Heute Nachmittag war ich auf dem Weg nach draussen zur Bootsanlegestelle um mein erstes Bild zu malen fuers September Projekt als mein Telefon klingelte und meine Freundin Rachel dran war. Sie fragte, ob unser Mathias nicht rüberkommen wolle um im Garten zu spielen. Als ich drüben angekommen war, sah ich die Wäscheleine voll mit bunten Fussballtrikots hängen und so entschied ich mich die Wäsche anstelle zu malen.
Danke Rachel! Es hat Spass gemacht und war ein fun Anfang fuer mein 30-Tage Projekt. Hm, was wohl morgen drankommt?

A long time has gone by since my last blog post!
Well, lots has happened and life has been busy. The biggest part of the 'not enough time' syndrom has been probably the decicion to homeschool my kids, which keeps me pretty busy.
But right now I'm on a Europe Vacation to visit family and friends in Germany and it so happened that Kim, a painting friend from Texas asked if I'd be interested to join in a few days painting in Venice. I was delighted when I figured out i could! A special 'thanks' to my family for taking my children, to Markus who supported me and pushed me to say 'yes' and to Kim to encourage me to come along.

Eine lange Zeit ist vergangen seit meinen letzten Blogeintrag.
Naja, vieles hat sich geaendert und das Leben ist halt schon sehr vollgestopft jeden Tag.
Die groesste Veraenderung und 'Freizeitfresser' ist wahrscheinlich die Entscheidung unsere Kinder
zu 'home schoolen', das haelt mich beschaeftigt!
Aber ich bin im Moment auf Europa Urlaub um unsere Familien und Freunde zu besuchen; und so kam es dass meine Freundin Kim anfragte ob ich mich nicht fuer ein paar Tage in Venedig zum malen treffen wollte. Ich war so aufgeregt als alles zusammengekommen ist und es geklappt hat!
Ein ganz grosses Dankeschoen an meine Familie und Freunde die mit den Kindern aushelfen, an Markus der mich unterstuetzt hat zu gehen und Kim die mich erst eingeladen hat!
Leider hatte ich noch keine Chance gute Fotos von den Bildern zu machen, drum sind jetzt hier die gerade fertiggestellten 'on location'. Vielen Dank fuers vorbeischauen und Gottes Segen! Simone

yesterday was a busy day painting with the 'plein air painters of the bay of fundy'- annual paint out. this year in Saint John with the show beeing on display at the Saint John Arts Center from June 24- September 4th 2010.

it was great meeting up with the other artists and soon afterwards everyone headed to their chosen painting spot and only a couple of us were still at the Saint John Power Boat Club marina painting away mid afternoon. the morning i spent painting this acrylic near the SJAC to be close for the noon meet-up.

today i didn't make it unfortunately due to restaurant (our business) obligations and our 3 children missing their mom.

below is the big Pool Painting i did a couple months back and never seem to find the time to blog about in depth.

It was meant to go into the humid pool area i choose high quality metal primed sign board and ASTM non-toxic sign paint (for the initial 'block in') and artists acrylics for the over layers.

out came a bright swirly and vibrant painting which i hope the viewer finds joyful and stimulating.

our inn pool will not be built this year- too many delays- but i had great fun 'going big'.

the size is 8ftx8ft and i had it attached to our living room wall while i painted it.

you can see it 'in persona' at the 'fundy artists' sale and show at the fairmont algonquin end of july.

with my pregnancy progressing into the few last weeks, i am feeling bigger by the day, hence my painting energy seems to dwindle a little… however i am still pushing as my upcoming show july29-august 1st, 2009 at the fairmont algonquin is coming fast… so far, i have held up my endeavor to paint every day… here a little update of my finished ones;-)
