St Andrews Winter Painting Spears Fishing Hut

orig. oil on canvas, 8x10in approx. $225

This one took me a bit longer to paint. I am determined to not give up with the sub zero temperatures the East Coast has seen lately. So I strapped my oil painting kit and tuckered off down to the wharf to do some paintin'. Smart thinking I was loaded with hand warmer pads, ski pants and triple layers underneath my down coat. I guess I must have looked like the Michelin Man wobbling down the street. I have to say I stayed warm until almost to the very end when the sun went down and my fingers and toes got nippy.

First session, laying underpainting down[/caption]
I couldn't quite finish the painting in one session, so I went down a couple of days later during similar weather. My hope is to see the various colours reflecting in the snow. Not just the dirty, brown snow, but the blue and purple-ish cast shadows, the yellowish snow reflecting the low angle afternoon rays and so on... it is a journey. The longer I am looking at snow (and white in general), the more I learn to see subtle colour variations in the landscape. I hope to continue observation this winter... sun is setting, time to finish the painting

Living the long winter

Making myself go out does my spirits well as they are lifted in the fresh breeze and with the sunshine. Winters are hard for me here, German winters are shorter and not as harsh, and I have to admit that I never really have adjusted to the winter climate here. My dear husband has just put in an order for a 'mood light' to help me beat the winter blues. It hasn't arrived but I'm looking forward to indulging in a daily dose of 'happy rays'. Only 50 more days til Spring, yey!
Hope to being able to share more painting with you soon! Thank you for stopping by!!

Christmas Snow St Andrews

orig. oil on canvas, 8x10in, $225
I hope you had a great Christmas this year! In our house it was a bit different. My husband came down with a bug and was sick to his stomach for a full 24 hours. He spent his Christmas 'talking to the big, white phone' as he so calls it. Poor dude. We even had to cancel our annual pay-what-you-want dinner that day! It was pretty upsetting (pun intended;-).
So, on Boxing Day I decided to head out with my oil paints to capture the low afternoon sun at low tide. However, I never made it out to Indian Point. Once I saw the beautiful interplay of shapes and colours in the homes lining Water Street, I just had to pitch my easel there. Hence the title Christmas Snow St Andrews.
Smart me, I dressed warm and had hand warmers with me. The temperatures dropped as I was painting the afternoon away and by the time I was done, my toes were really cold and the finger tips nippy. However, the oil paints stayed great, got a bit more sticky maybe, but overall, a great performance. In contrast, when I venture out with my watercolour, painting is very different. There my paint freezes inside the palette and onto the brush (even with water being replaced with vodka or other high percentage clear spirit of sorts).

On another note:

Now, the New Year is fast approaching and I have a few more camper calendars here. So, as a Special I've reduced my camper calendars more than half to $10 (first come first served, click here to order)!
If you are looking for a glamping gift for a friend or yourself, now's the time! If you have ordered one and like to get another to give away, no better time than now!
Thank you so much for all your encouragement this past year!
Stay put what's coming in the new year- I am working on some fun new ideas! Stay tuned!

Happy Weekend to you- and a snowy one for us that is! All day the snow flakes were dancing and the snow ploughs were going, so I thought a nice bright summery camper would do good for the soul... This cute pinkie with apple green accents here is still a work in progress and will sport some more flower decals and music notes along bright green shasta 'wings'- down the road when her owner gets around to finishing up this project- I think she looks just darling like this.
Guess what: The newly elected Prime MInister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, will come to our little hometown of 2500 people tomorrow for his first cabinet meeting with his new team. The whole town is gearing up for such a celebrity. All scheduled activities as far as I know will go on at the newly renovated Algonquin Resort, a Marriott Signature Property. Our restaurant will be open by reservation. So, tomorrow before Mass I see myself going out and getting some Valentines Heart Decorations up on the Balusters of our balcony- today was just too snowy.
Here is a shot of the snowfalls today from my living-room balcony, really pretty, but cold and windy. I slept in and stayed indoors all day, was just nice to chill out! See you tomorrow again!                                     Simone

Summer Tree

Maple Tree
oil on board, 10x8in

Here's one last painting I did during Michael Chesley Johnson's workshop this summer.
Trees are so beautiful, and all to often do we walk by them without really noticing their beauty! This Maple is down by the Water, near the kayak rental place and the dive shop.
Thank you for stopping by!                                 Simone

Danke fuer's vorbeischau'n!                       Simone

Commission Painting and Display

Day out in St. Andrews
watercolour, 6x7.5in, sold

The day after my 30-paintings-in-30-days challenge, I headed right back to painting: watercolour this time (for a commission). The client asked for a St. Andrews scene as the painting was a going away gift.

I finally got around to display the dried paintings from my September challenge! I think the display turned out fun and colourful- and our french butler is not so lonely now;-)
If you are interested in a painting (think Christmas!)  stop by the restaurant anytime after 3:30pm to view them. $50 each, the big Coca-Cola is $150 (10$ from each sale donated to 'Let's hear it for Debby Fundraiser for hearing aids).
I am wishing you a great start into this week!                                                                                                                                                                          Blessings,      Simone

Display at Europa Inn Entrance Area

Simone

Windy by the Wharf

Dancing Dinghy by the Wharf, oil, 6x6, sold
(with all paintings sold in this 30-day-challenge: 10$ donated to 'Let's hear it for Debby' Fundraiser: www.facebook.com/events/933751463305810/?ref_dashboard_filter=upcoming  )

Wooo, was it ever windy today down by the wharf, true autumn spirit! I was glad to have a hoody and a scarf with me! The little green dinghy was dancing in the choppy waves and the clouds were playing colour-change-games with the water as they were rushing by... Happy fall y'all!  Simone

this is more like the real colours...

Schoenen Herbstanfang euch allen! Simone

Day 14: Cummings Convenience Store

Cummings Convenience Store, oil, 6x6, Sold

What an eventful day! Yes, Sundays are special for me anyway and so we began it with Mass, after which my dear friend Mary had her birthday today and we met up at the Algonquin Resort for lunch.
It was also kind of a 'good bye' lunch, too as they are heading for Europe for at least a half a year now and we'll miss them much... especially our Sabrina. After lunch I checked out my painting 'fire and ice' at the Algonquin pool, and it looked rockin' awesome (do I sound full of myself now?? Well, I am just so happy to see it in this beautiful spacious environment!)
I had a good visit with a man who survived a most horrible work accident, and talking to him and seeing him so humbly accepting and positively looking towards his future was deeply moving for me.

Afterwards I had a couple of hours 'free time' which I jumped at the opportunity to paint a subject I had eyed at for a while: Cummings Convenience. I inched myself along the main street into town to find the best painting spot and found it underneath a big tree on the opposite side of the street of the gas bar.
As car where zapping by I enjoyed myself painting, hoping the rain would hold off (and it did! In fact it cleared up later on). After I was done painting I pumped some gas and asked when the renovations would start and the clerk told me tomorrow morning!! What luck, I was able to paint the store with its vintage charm JUST before the reno trucks pull in- I felt like a million bucks! So, here it is, Sundays are special, they are the Lord's Day and I hope it was a blessed day for you as it was for me! Thanks for stopping by!                                                                 Simone
'Fire and Ice'
on display at the Algonquin Resort, acrylic on metal board, 8ftx8ft, 7800$

Danke fuer's vorbeischauen!                                       Simone

Day 12: Cottage Craft St. Andrews

Cottage Craft, 6x6, oil, 50$

Today's painting is of Cottage Craft, a landmark building of St. Andrews.
Cottage Craft was a highly successful yarn, knitting and weaving business and is celebrating
it's 100th anniversary this year. The Ross Museum has a special whimsy exhibit downstairs which is worth seeing.

Day #10: Sunny Afternoon Boat

Sunny Afternoon Boat, palette knife oil, 6x6 x 2 3/8in, sold

Today's painting I took off to the St. Andrews wharf again. It's home territory for me and the kids love collecting treasures- so, it's a win/win.
The sun was glistening on the water surface and bathing the surroundings in radiant light.
I wanted to dig right in and opted for the palette knife. The brush was only used to tint the canvas yellow, all other paint was applied with the knife. I'm tired now, the wind and sun combo wears me out- in a good way;-)  Thanks for stopping by! Blessings,                              Simone

2 3/8" deep canvas

Vergelt's Gott fuer's Vorbeischau'n!                                                Simone

Summer Boat

Summer Boat, oil, 6x6in, 50$

Day 9 of the 30-paintings-in-30-days challenge was spent in glorious sunshine at St. Andrews' Blockhouse. It actually started out with schooling and a homeschool group hike up Chamcook Mountain and a meet at the Blockhouse beach. The late summer sun felt so great with just a nip of crisp air. The other moms were chatting while I was painting along with my easel right in the middle and all the kids were playing by the canons, the beach and some tried to go into the (cold) water.
There is one smaller boat and when low tide it is stranded making for a great painting subject, too, but today was full high tide and she was dancing while I painted her.

St. Andrews Lighthouse

St. Andrews Lighthouse, 6x6, oil, sold

What a glorious day it was in St. Andrews today. I just had to go down to the wharf.
After a lovely walk with my dear friend Mary and her doggie Callie and my boys,
it was an obvious decision to paint water.
Our Sabrina went for track-and-field today for the first time and came in 6th (out of 30+ kids), she was so proud...
Birthday Pool Party yesterday, so much fun!

Toller Tag, nette Menschen, schoenes Wetter!

View from Home

Greenock Steeple, oil, 6x6, $50

Today's painting is a view from our home. As you know, I see 6 steeples looking out my balcony, I picked the Greenock Church today, a landmark building of St. Andrews, NB, painted from the parking spots.
Here's a bit more history: The Presbyterians of St. Andrews organized for worship in 1822 as a congregation of the Church of Scotland. The church building, finished in June 1824, was the gift of Capt. Christopher Scott; a patriotic native of the town of Greenock, Scotland. Finished with the finest materials, mahogany, maple (including bird's eye maple), the building is an architectural showpiece and National Historic Site.
Below is my little artist Maximilian, trying watercolours painting the german garden gnom.

Peeking Over the Fence, Day #6

Peeking over the Fence, oil, 6x6in (15x15cm approx.), plein air, 50$

Today's painting is of my neighbours house's beautiful little back entrance.
The house has a white picket fence which blocks out the view from the Street.
He is very attentive to his yard and the little house is a gem downtown St. Andrews.  The house has
a law office on the ground floor.
It was overcast all morning and looked like rain, so I decided to stay on our deck under the umbrella.
Now it is all cleared up and the sun is shining.
Today is also the birthday of our youngest: Mathias is turning 5! Happy Birthday Mathias!

Neighbourhood steeple

Wesley United Steeple, Oil, 6x6 in, 50$

Today's painting is of St. Andrews' United Church's steeple. From our balcony we see 6 churches!
After a fun painting lesson with a friend of mine (watercolour value scale), I headed out with the boys and painted close to home so the kids could play in our yard in the meantime.
This painting didn't come easy, not sure- was it too many shapes on such a small canvas, or the late afternoon sun, but certainly the somewhat new-to-me oil paint... well, I have to admit, it is not coming easy, but my hope for this 30 day challenge was to get more comfortable with oils and its set-up; we'll see by the end of the month how things are coming along, haha! I'll keep at it!
Stay tuned (and be entertained;-)!
Simone

Watercolour basics, value scales, learn to mix watercolours with the 3 primaries

Day #2: Beach Chair

Beach Chair, 6x6x1.5in, 50$
Today was the first day of school. It was Mathias' first day in K! We kept the lesson short and sweet and opted after lunch to go to the beach. We've sat at the chairs numerous times and today I wanted to paint them. After a smooth and fast block-in, somehow things seemed to drag and I started fiddling.
Hence for the end result I'd like to darken some parts, add some accents and tighten some edges.
On a higher note, I am really pleased about the overall values and colour compared to the scene, which was my focus.   Thanks for stopping by;-)                                                                     Simone

Danke fuers Vorbeischau'n!                                                                                           Simone

30 paintings in 30 days- Day#1- Laundry Day at Rachel's house

September 1st: Today's the first day for my 30-paintings-in-30-days challenge (organized by Leslie Saeta, host of artists helping artists blog, an inspiring Blog/Talk Radio for artists),
also, it is the day before 'back to school' for many families.
This afternoon I was on the way out the door to paint by the wharf when the phone rang and my friend Rachel asked if our Mathias would like to come over to play outside. So, as I walked over I saw the bright coloured soccer t's hanging to dry and opted to paint this instead.
Thank you, Rachel for allowing me to paint! A fun start to a fun project! What's tomorrow??

Laundry Day at Rachel's House, Oil, plein air, 6x6x1.5in, 50$

Schulanfang hier in Canada.
Hm, was wohl morgen drankommt?
