Range Tower at Wood Island Light

Wood-Island-Light-PEI_Simone-Ritter-Art_watercolour_2016_5x7in
Range Tower- Wood Island Light
orig. watercolour, 5x7in approx.
see it in person at Sunbury Shores Art, May 6-20
This little painting of a little lighthouse is one of the range towers near the Wood Island Lighthouse that I painted a few days ago (you can see it by clicking here).
As I am learning about lighthouses, as I paint them, Wikipedia is an informative companion for me. Here is what it states:
Leading lights (also known as range lights in the US) are a pair of light beacons, used in navigation to indicate a safe passage for vessels entering a shallow or dangerous channel; and may also be used for position fixing. At night, the lights are a form of leading line that can be used for safe navigation. The beacons consist of two lights that are separated in distance and elevation, so that when they are aligned, with one above the other, they provide a bearing. Range lights are often illuminated day and night.
In some cases the two beacons are unlighted, in which case they are known as a range in the United States or a transit in the UK. The beacons may be artificial or natural.

Operation of Range Lights:

Two lights are positioned near one another. One, called the front light, is lower than the one behind, which is called the rear light. At night when viewed from a ship, the two lights only become aligned vertically when a vessel is positioned on the correct bearing. If the vessel is on an incorrect course, the lights will not align.
During the day, the range tower lights may not easily be seen and therefore leading lights are often fitted with secondary visual aids, e.g. large red flags with wide black lines running down them. When both red flags and black lines line up, the navigator knows that the vessel is on the correct bearing. The structures are usually painted to make them more prominent.
Some major rivers, such as the Elbe River in Germany, have a series of leading lines. When it is necessary to make a turn, the navigator lines up the next pair of leading lights. This provides guidance from Hamburg to the sea, using successive pairs of leading lights.
Leading lights were used in England as early as 1763 to mark the Port of Liverpool.[3] The first set of range lights in the United States were privately established by subscription at Newburyport Harbor in Massachusetts in 1788.[4]
Leading lights are sometimes designed to be movable, allowing their position to be shifted in the event of a change in the safe channel; these include one at Hilton Head, South Carolina, the original Chatham Light, and the Nantucket Beacon, predecessor to the Nantucket Harbor Range.

East Coast Lighthouse

East Coast Lighthouse

Today no camper again... the day was packed to say the least: cleaned all the kids rooms, ironed 3 loads of laundry (still at it), and discovered a leak in the kitchen, which I'm mopping water up all afternoon/evening. I hope we have a plumber willing to come tomorrow, Sunday!
Hence, I'm happy to have one spare painting to share, which I painted a few days ago at Green's Point Light. The kids played at the beach, so I took the opportune moment to capture this beautiful lighthouse. It houses a small museum which is run by locals interested in keeping their lighthouse open for visitors. When heading for Deer Island, it is just a small detour, so do stop by for a visit if you can. Recommend highly;-)
I'm wishing you a relaxing Sunday and thank you for stopping by!                                               Simone

Simone

PEI visit and Fundraiser update

Wood Islands Lighthouse
watercolour, en plein air, 5x7in approx., NFS

Perfect weather to fly the kites

Well, it has taken us a while to do this, but we finally did visit PEI (Prince Edward Island)!
Our inn guests often do the round trip NB, PEI, NS and ask all sorts of questions, which are hard to answer as all summer we're working 7 days/week. So, the Ritters packed up as soon as 'Indulge' Festival was over and visited PEI for 4 days. Well, the sidewalks are pretty much rolled up now, but we saw a tour bus at Point Prim Lighthouse and decided to tug behind it (in hopes of seeing some sights open still). We got to go up two lighthouses and enjoyed the late fall scenery with almost zero tourists, wohoo! We enjoyed a scoop of 'Cow's Creamery' ice cream, yummy, went to 'Leonhard's Cafe' (absolute recommend when in Charlottetown) and spend a lot of fun time at the Hotel pool as per the kids' request.
I managed to paint one painting, too! It felt good to relax and reconnect as a family and now we're back and refreshed- restaurant open again, and starting with the carpenter tomorrow tackling the back of the house, haha!
Thanks for stopping by!                                                    Blessings, Simone

PS: Debbie's hearing aids are fully funded now! With your help, I was able to donate $130 to the cause! Thank you!!
From any one of my '30-paintings-in-30-days' paintings sold now, I will donate $10 to David Taylor who is battling cancer and unable to work at this present time.

Wood Islands Lighthouse
featuring a lovely museum inside

Wooo, was it ever windy today down by the wharf, true autumn spirit! I was glad to have a hoody and a scarf with me! The little green dinghy was dancing in the choppy waves and the clouds were playing colour-change-games with the water as they were rushing by... Happy fall y'all!  Simone

this is more like the real colours...

Schoenen Herbstanfang euch allen! Simone

St. Andrews Lighthouse

St. Andrews Lighthouse, 6x6, oil, sold

What a glorious day it was in St. Andrews today. I just had to go down to the wharf.
After a lovely walk with my dear friend Mary and her doggie Callie and my boys,
it was an obvious decision to paint water.
Our Sabrina went for track-and-field today for the first time and came in 6th (out of 30+ kids), she was so proud...
Birthday Pool Party yesterday, so much fun!

Toller Tag, nette Menschen, schoenes Wetter!
