Today's feature camper is this 1968 Forester 'Violet'. It required a lot of sensitive mixing and keeping the wells clean to get all those purples and violets, but I enjoyed it. See, every day a new challenge for me here, haha. 

Also, today I was sooo sure to be done before dinner time with the painting as I have specifically nothing planned for the whole day. Oh well, it is again 10:30pm as I write this... And I still have to bake an apple cake as I have a friend come over for coffee in the morning. And drain the chicken stock bubbling on the stove.

So, you see, my time management skills are definitely not 100% and could use some adjusting.

My Mommy Day Today:

This afternoon was a most beautiful day outside. The morning started foggy and drab, but by noon it cleared up and the sun was glorious mid afternoon. Once they arrived from school, I grabbed the kids, the bikes and scooters and we headed down to Indian Point Beach for fresh air and beach combing. Besides, I wanted to check out if that aqua Shasta Re-Issue was still at the campground. Prepared, I had brought my paints. Unfortunately, the camper had left already.

At the Beach though, a large rock formation is my kids' imaginary pirate ship and they always have fun hopping and climbing busily up and down. Today the fighting was kept to a minimum- bonus!

As I was taking photos of them, I realized again how fast they are growing up. I cherish my time with them and try to spend meaningful time with them, often outdoors. I enjoy our small adventures, even if it's just a bike ride down to the beach and collecting shells. Winter will be here in no time and then I enjoy the sweet memories of summer days gone by.

This 1955 Trotwood Cub is my feature camper today. Have I ever mentioned I love red in vintage trailers???? Love the striped awning, wanted one for my little campie, but not the right red to be found for this color connoisseur, haha!

Unfortunately, I don't have any info on the (hi)story of this little guy, so I hopped over to my dear wiki-friends from the TinCanTourist website (big thanks!):

"It all began with Ray Kuntz and Warren Wagner back in the late 1920’s. These schoolteachers occupied their summers in a garage on Grand Avenue. Here they were designing a prototype canvas tent on wheels to take camping.

Despite the economic gloom of the Great Depression in 1932 they opened Trotwood Trailers. By 1950 they grew to control 20% of the camper trailer market in Ohio. Because there were many models to choose from. One of their largest models can still be seen in the mobile home park on East Main Street of Trotwood Ohio. It was a regular sight to see 12 trailers rolling out of town every day on their way to customers across North America.

Their neighbors tolerated the pair working long hours from their ‘home office’. They were not realizing the impact their inventions would have on the trailer world as a result from innovative axle systems to the first side entry door trailer. 

Unfortunately Fire destroyed Trotwood’s legacy business back in 1981. Thousands of campers and travel trailers were built on North Broadway, Trotwood Ohio, for delivery all across the country. Trotwood Trailers were respected due to their innovative features and high quality construction. Many still survive today but the company does not."

Today's camper is one of the hardest campers I have ever painted. It's shape, color and a canvas tent that is longer than the trailer caused a huge challenge.

I call today's painting a fail, but a learning experience.

Still I am posting my laboured efforts, just to show you that not every painting works out. And I have to be honest, posting this is a bit humbling, too. And I hope this painting will be a good teaching-lesson for me. I want to get better at what I do, this is why I started painting to paint 30 paintings in 30 days a few years back under the umbrella of artist Leslie Saeta's call to join her.

Let's analyze...!

So what happened  today you might ask? I was trying so hard to capture the immaculate high gloss finish. The muted colors were almost white soft pastel tones. I was trying hard to capture the rounded front windows, the tent-addition and simplify the layout somewhat. There were extra canvas stipes on the awning poles, too that I wasn't sure would read right in the painting. I edited those out.

First, the area rug seemed to fall out from the painting. I didn't see this as I don't have good perspective from the get-go. Then I asked my dear husband and he told me. As I tried to see it and adjust the rug's shape, I saw the pole on the left ended up too long, and as a result the corner of the awning looked to be by that pole.

So I painted the white pole over to fit with the dark open door (you can still see where I patched that pole, haha). At this point, I knew there was no going back, nor going forward. So, here I am posting this camper in hopes to being able to try a second round... but I might take a couple of days with other campers to calm my nerves, haha.

This 1966 Shasta 1500 'Free' is my feature camper today. I love its patriotic set up! It's proud owner shares her love for her country and lovingly decorated this little Shasta in Stars and Stripes.

Growing up in Germany, there was very little display of national pride as in flags or banners or such (except for soccer events and other global sports competitions where the Germans won). I think after WW2 the whole national pride thing got ushered out the door and instead of flags and banners, people measured their pride in accomplishments.

When we arrived first here in Canada in 2000, I have to admit that I felt almost a sense of bewilderment when I saw all the flags proudly flying at every street corner and many homes. I have come to appreciate it over the years. The flag is an outward sign that unites a people, even if they don't agree on much else besides. A love for their country and a sense of a kind of nationwide brotherhood is best displayed every year during July 1st, the national holiday.

I see the same with my US friends. We live close to the US border and even more than the Canadians, the US residents love to share their love for their country in flying their colors.

By now, I am a bit saddened when I don't see the flags in Germany when we visit. But I understand. And being humble has not often been a bad trait. Germans as far as I can say, as a people, are not wired that way, haha. Their open-ness often comes across as frank and direct and you have no idea how often I have stepped in a pot of grease by just talking out loud- especially here with the polite Canadians! Yup, still learning that 'silence is golden'- maybe I should just get myself a flag instead, haha)

Ha, who do we have here today? Her name is Little Pearl! Isn't she cute? She looks like a little bird with a beak, so small and round. This photo was submitted at an angle, just like the portrait here. I googled to see more of those Little Gem's and I could find a few, but only a few. Pretty rare, I'd say!

I have painted a painting last time around, without the awning and all the dress-up- and at a regular landscape format, you can see it by clicking here (the painting size was 5x7in, this here is 11x14in approx.).

I enjoy very much painting those little campers, they make me happy, every day I can take a brush into my hand! I also have to admit, that it is quite a bit of pressure to produce a painting for each day of the month... and I don't want to post one that went terribly wrong (which happens of course! And not rarely either! LOL).

But here now, our 1965 Little Gem Camper 'Pearl', a fun painting today for you, just right because it is weekend after all! I wish you a relaxing couple of days with good early fall weather and some quiet time to smell the air and the roses!

This camper truly is an oldie but goldie. Pre-1050's campers are something very special and rare. Often they feature plain siding, no grooves or such, which came later. This one is like this, solidly built, just beautiful.

Here's my story about a pre-50's camper:

Last year, there was a 1940-something listed on Craigslist, pretty bad condition outside. The guy didn't even post inside pics, but the camper was only $500. I wanted to buy it so badly, dreaming about a beautiful resurrection making my perfect studio space in our backyard. But my husband was rather frightened at the thought of yet another old clunker on the property. Picture him as he has an inn located in a small, upscale seaside resort town with lots of people visiting for its beauty and charm and wonderfully kept heritage homes. Now add a very large (30-40 foot long) old, shabby looking camper in our backyard- oh my! My heart is still aching we didn't get it, it could have been a beauty restored!!! Well, he just doesn't have the same vision.

I guess I have told you the story before about my complete dis-assemble camper still waaaiting in the back for its resurrection, haha! Poor Markus, he surely has his hands full with me. But I love writing to you all here, as you camper lovers understand me and are on MY side!!!

So, long story short, I am glad this (shorter) 1947 Lintzcraft camper is in the very best of hands as its proud owner takes it to vintage camper rally's to show her off.

First Camper of the Month is: tataaaa...(think drumroll)... this 1994 Airstream Excella!
It was parked as a wonderful surprise at our local campground and just looked so nice that I asked the owner how long they were staying and also, if I'd be allowed to do a painting of their beauty. It is 25 ft long and fairly new to the owners. I hope they will enjoy a lot of fun times with their Glampie-campie.

This is a photo of the work-in-progress while I was creating this painting a few days ago. I painted 'en plein air', meaning on location outside. I love painting on location, as it sharpens my skill to see proper light and low values, colours and more so, I need to work quickly as the changing location of the sun changes the shadows, reflections and colours in a scene, especially here where there are a lot of reflection on the aluminum body of the camper.

Who do we have today? May I introduce Claris Caravan, almost would I call her an 'old friend'. She is from New Zealand and quite busy socializing as event prop and business venture extraordinaire. She does get quite a bit of publicity, too. Her proud owner has a sensible touch in decorating her, just enough, not too much. I love the beach-ey feel, the hot sun shining through the set up. Just the right thing for the colder regions that are longing for spring- like me!!! I have painted her before, last year, and you can see the blogpost about that by clicking here

We here have a relatively mild winter so far... hm, I better not write that actually, it might turn on me!!!

I'm inching myself up towards the end of this month's camper a day challenge and I hope it brought you some smiles and joy- it certainly was a fun start for this new year for me, kind of a celebration! My first camper a day I did last January, exclusively with Canadian campers. Here is the collage I did featuring all of them:

As I was busy painting yesterday's featured airstream over two days, I painted two campie portraits today. My time painting a-camper-a-day for January is coming to a close, so I try and stick to my goal. What a fun month it was!

I have been thinking about travelling for longer periods, kind of exploring our beautiful world for some time- and what better way to do it than bringing a little house-on-wheels along? The trend of 'tiny home' comes to mind. I'd so love to pack up and go! My dear husband would have a hard time as our inn is a big, 100 year old house that cannot be left alone for long periods (especially in the winter, where it is so cold here and pipes freeze up and burst and in the summer we are so busy with the rooms and restaurant)... maybe later... something to put in the bucket list I guess!

Now, can you see where the travelling Scotsman impression was taken? If you look closely you can see the huge rock formation with the Mount Rushmore iconic chisseled bust of George Washington peeking out. What a great memory! I so much like this shot, but had such a hard time with the perspective, especially of the car. I might re-visit this tomorrow, we'll see. Sometimes the eyes see better after sleeping over it for night.

I had started this painting a few weeks ago, so I am happy to say I did finish it today! What a great combo duo those two make. The owner is very patient as he contacted me in late summer already and now finally I am getting around to paint his babies! In real life his babies are the same colour, which I might adjust tomorrow, a true collector!

He writes to me: (I've) seen your post cross posted in our group and thought you may like these. It's a 1955 Nomad named Norma and a 1963 Shasta Airflyte Named Jean after my Mother. My wife and I travel a lot with it. The sunset is in Cedar Key Florida....

I have to say: Thank you, thank you for sharing your wonderful duo with me and us! It makes me so happy to see people take pride in their ride (hey and it even rhymes). Both of them travel a lot and enjoy camping while 'en route'.

I had a date this afternoon with our youngest, we enjoyed a hamburger and sunday ice cream and he was just beaming with pride and happiness- and as I just tucked him in he gave me the biggest hug... oh, what a great day it was- filled with the simple pleasures! I'm sending you best wishes for a fun and relaxing weekend- and for any travellers: stay safe where ever you are!

Today's featured camper is this 1967 Silverstreak called 'Stella'. Glamped up with vintage collectible coolers and earthy tones, the owner tied in beautifully with her trademark-golden-stripe. Silverstreaks are pretty high-end trailers and have a loyal following, arguably sporting better craftsmanship than the ever popular Airstream. I don't really know as I have not seen them side by side, actually never seen a Silverstreak in person yet! Hopefully some day! I started painting this painting early this morning at 3:30am after a bout of insomnia and stuffy nose- I thought it's better to get up and do something productive than flipping in bed not being able to sleep and driving Markus crazy, too. I just finished the painting now; it felt good to have the bulk of the painting already done!

Was crossing to the US to drop off some shipments at the post office- there are some paintings and calendars underway to their new collectors!

Today's Camper Model I chose for my Orthodox Christian friends that will be celebrating their Christmas tomorrow, January 6th. 'Merry Christmas' to you! My ancestors were German 'imports' to Ukraine that came under Catherine the Great to work the farms and had to flee under Stalin's Great Purge. I grew up eating borscht soup and vareniki (stuffed pasta-type-dumplings with quark/cottage cheese and other fillings- I just learn it is a traditional Christmas Eve dish as well, so here we go- how fitting!). My friend Natasha has been cooking Ukrainian delights and bringing back some nice childhood memories for me- thank you, Natasha!!

Anyhow, thank you for sharing 'Clark' Camper in his Christmas fineries with me and us, it was a delight to paint- even though it might not qualify as a traditional Eastern Decor, ha ha! And Happy Christmas Eve to all my Orthodox Christian friends near and far!

Kit Companion 'Miss Priss': here we have another sassy camper today. Did we have 'Boss Lady' yesterday, here we have 'Miss Priss'! The Woman power campers are marching on.

It takes me quite a while to paint those little artworks, actually when I started over a year ago, I thought it would be little 'quick sketches' of about 30 minutes for the small size of 5x7in which seemed to me just fair... well, let me tell you I'm at about 3-4 hours for each one by now! By the time they are painted, archived, photographed, blogged, posted on social and so on, half a day is gone like a flash! Artists really love what they are doing, I can tell you this much- and for me painting every day for January is a treat to cut my cold winter shorter (especially seeing your campers in hot summer weather while we here in New Brunswick are freezing at -12Celcius).

Well, we don't have many strawberry fields here in New Brunswick, Canada, but many, many blueberry fields. Of course, we are bordering Maine, US, so well known for their wild blueberries.

Here is what Wikipedia says: Atlantic Canada contributes approximately half of the total North American wild/lowbush (blueberry) annual production of 68,000 t (150,000,000 lb).

When we drive up to the city (Saint John), we drive by lovely red blueberry fields near St. George. The leaves turn flaming red in the fall and early winter, really wonderful. I drove by this field so many times thinking I should paint this especially with the one evergreen Tree growing in the middle of the field. So, now I finally did it! I am so glad I did, the paintings came so easy, it was a pure joy to paint them. Sometimes painting a painting is almost like tug-of-war, back and forth and back and forth until in the end I'm so exhausted I have to walk away... strange, isn't it? But here is was wonderfully relaxing, the paint stayed wet just long enough to blend in deeper, richer mixes and the red over orange mingled do smoothly.

Anyhow, enough talk, I hope you enjoy the paintings- I enjoyed painting them VERY much!

Naja, wir haben keine Erdbeerfelder hier in New Brunswick, Kanada, aber viele Blaubeerfelder. Natürlich, wir sind ja direkter Nachbar zum Staat Maine in den USA, so bekannt fuer den Blaubeerexport.

Auf Wikipedia heisst es dass Atlantik Kanada die Hälfte des Nordamerikanischen Marktanteils hat von den niedrigwachsenden /wilden Blaubeeren mit jährlicher Erntemenge von 68 000 Tonnen.

Wenn wir nach Saint John fahren, sehen wir die schoenen roten Blaubeerfelder nahe St. George. Die Blätter färben sich flammenrot im Herbst, richtig schoen! Ich bin an diesem Feld schon unzählige Male vorbeigefahren und habe immer gedacht, dass musst du unbedingt malen, besonders mit dem windschiefen Tannenbaum mitten im Feld. So, und nun habe ich es doch endlich gemacht! Die Aquarelle sind so leicht von der Hand gegangen dass es eine wahre Freude war! Manchmal ist das Malen eines Bildes eher wie ein Tauziehen- hin und zurück, hin-und zurück, bis zum Schluss einer aufgibt: oft laufe ich davon, komplett fix und alle... schon komisch, oder? Aber hier ging alles so entspannt zu, die Farbe trocknete nicht zu schnell und nicht zu langsam, genau richtig um über gelb-orange tiefere rottöne  zu legen und die Ränder ineinander übergehen zu lassen.

Genug g'schwaetzt, ich hoffe euch gefallen die zwei Aquarellbilder- mir haben sie unheimlich viel Spass bereitet!

I painted this watercolor painting on Friday while waiting at my kids' school for them to finish their week. The management is very generous and has a room for me at the school where I am free to paint, work on the computer or sketch while waiting for the kidlets. Now I look forward to the Fridays and to painting!

Ich malte dieses Bild am Freitag waehrend ich auf meine Kinder wartete bis sie in der Schule fertig waren. Die Lehrer haben sehr grosszuegig ein Zimmer fuer mich in dem ich malen kann oder am Computer arbeiten oder zeichnen bis die Kinder fertig sind. Nun freue ich mich auf Freitag und aufs Malen!

Camper of the Day is this 1967 Holiday Rambler. When you look at other '67 makes I have painted the last few days here and here, you see how much more modern its lines look compared to industry competitors, which comes from Holiday Rambler being heralded as one of industry's leader.

Here's what www.tincantourist.com says: "Holiday Rambler was responsible for many firsts; built-in refrigerators, holding tanks, aerodynamic radius-ed corners and originated the 48-inch-wide dinette/bed concept. In 1961, Holiday Rambler’s introduction of aluminum body framing ushered in a new era of lighter, stronger and more durable recreational vehicles (RVs). This aluminum frame became the standard for lighter and stronger RVs for 40 years."

Wohnwagen des Tages ist heute dieser 1967 Holiday Rambler. When ich mir die anderen 1967 Camperportraits der vergangenen Tage anschaue hier und hier, sehe ich wieviel moderner sein Karosseriedesign ist. Das kommt daher, dass Holiday Rambler in vielen Punkten Industry Leader ist in Neuerfindungen. 

Und das ist etwas auf das man auch richtig stolz sein kann! Der TinCanTourist Website zufolge waren sie die ersten mit 'slide outs' und interessant ist auch dass Harley Davidson die Firma gekauft hat in 1986 und dann 10 Jahre spaeter wiederverkauft hat.

Ich lerne immer was neues mit diesen Wohnwagen!

Ich bin schon gespannt was ich morgen malen werde- ich weiss dass immer erst kurz vorher!

Today's Camper is 60 years old this year! Happy Birthday little Comet 'Buffalo Moon'!

I don't have more info unfortunately, but like the old fashioned zig-zag siding style that creates special light/shadow reflections.

After yesterday's late night painting session, I smartened up and was all done painting by 2pm today- ha!

But I already know tomorrow will be a different story again due to 'excursion day' at the school, which is not a complain at all as I will be joining a trip to New River Beach- yey! I have painted there before when it was the sandcastle competition... you can see the posts here and here und here.

Unser heutiger Wohnwagen hat dieses Jahr seinen 60'sten Geburtstag! Alles Gute kleiner Comet 'Buffalo Moon'.

Ich habe nicht mehr Info von diesem kleinen Campie, aber ich mag die Zickzack Aussenwaende, die hell/dunkel das Licht reflektieren.

Nach meiner gestrigen Spaetnachtmalepisode, war ich heute gescheiter und um 14 Uhr schon fertig mit dem Malen, ha!

Aber ich weiss schon heute, dass es morgen wieder anderst sein wird, da Schulausflug ist. Ich bin aber nicht am mich beschweren denn es geht nach New River Beach- yippie! Ich malte da schon ein paar Mal diesen Sommer... hier und hier und hier sind die Bilder.

A very popular make, the Scotty camper is my feature today. Believe it, the owner is a real vintage camper lover and she renovated it to the tee- not for herself but for her two sisters as a surprise!!! Now, wouldn't this be an awesome surprise to get???

Eine sehr beliebte Wohnwagenmarke, ein Scotty stelle ich heute vor. Kaum zu glauben, aber die Besitzerin ist eine echte Liebhaberin von Oldtimer-wohnwagen und sie renovierte ihn bis ins kleinste Detail- nicht fuer sich selber, sondern fuer ihre zwei Schwestern als Überraschung!!! Na, wäre das nicht eine super Überraschung fuer uns ein Schmuckstück zu erhalten???
